The Mill on the Floss
Автор: Eliot George
Издательство: Wordsworth, 1993
Жанр: Wordsworth
Страниц: 496 страниц
Загрузил: neptun, 27 октября 2009
The Mill on the Floss, based on George Eliot's own experiences of provincial life, is a masterpiece of ambiguity in which moral choice is subjected to the hypocrisy of the Victorian age. As the headstrong Maggie Tulliver grows into womanhood, the deep love which she has for her brother Tom turns into conflict, because she cannot reconcile his bourgeois standards with her own lively intelligence. Maggie is unable to adapt to her community or break free from it, and the result, on more than one level, is tragedy.

Жанр: Wordsworth
Страниц: 320 страниц

This title comes with an introduction and notes by Anne Varty, Royal Holloway, University of London. De Profundis is Wilde's eloquent and bitter reproach from prison to his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas. He contrasts his behaviour with that of his close friend Robert Ross who became Wilde's literary executor. The Ballad of Reading Gaol is a deeply moving and characteristically generous poem on the horrors of prison life, which was published anonymously in 1898. This collection also includes the essay The Soul of Man under Socialism and two of his Platonic dialogues, The Decay of Lying and The Critic as Artist.

Enter Arsene Lupin, Gentleman — Cambrioleur, the 'Prince of Thieves', one of the most daring and dashing individuals who ever lifted a diamond necklace from under the noses of the authorities. Young and handsome, laughing his way through difficulties and danger, Lupin is also the master of disguise and languages. His sense of humour and conceit make life difficult for the police who attribute most of the major crimes in France to Lupin and his gang of ruffians and urchins. Maurice Leblanc's stories are lively and witty, occasionally taking on the air of burlesque, especially when Lupin pits his wits against the English detective named variously 'Holmlock Shears' and 'Herlock Sholmes' These are significant tales in the history of crime fiction but, more importantly, they are great fun.

The whole house whirled around two or three times then rose slowly through the air with little Dorothy and dog Toto inside. After what seemed an age to Dorothy the house landed with a great crash and upon opening the door she and Toto were amazed to see a beautiful brilliant green land full of sunshine and flowers. It is not long before she and Toto meet the motley crew — Scarecrow, Lion and Tin Woodman — who are to become her travelling companions along the Yellow Brick Road which leads to the Emerald City and the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Dorothy and Toto have many adventures before the Good Witch grants them their wish — to return home to Kansas. But that is just the beginning; many more adventures lie ahead, with the weirdest folk to meet and the most fantastical places to explore — all in the Land of Oz.

Mary Barton
Автор: Gaskell Elizabeth Cleghorn
Издательство: Wordsworth, 2012
Жанр: Wordsworth
Страниц: 448 страниц
Загрузил: vtormai, 24 июля 2014
Elizabeth Gaskell's first novel depicts nothing less than the great clashes between capital and labour, which arose from rapid industrialisation and problems of trade in the mid-nineteenth century. But these clashes are dramatized through personal struggles. John Barton has to reconcile his personal conscience with his socialist duty, risking his life and liberty in the process. His daughter Mary is caught between two lovers, from opposing classes — worker and manufacturer. And at the heart of the narrative lies a murder which implicates them all. Mary Barton was published in 1848, at a time of great social ferment in Europe, and it reflects its revolutionary moment through an English lens. Elizabeth Gaskell wrote her first novel about the world in which she lived — Manchester at the height of the industrial revolution. As the wife of a Unitarian minister she was solidly middle-class; but she also had close contact with the working classes around her, sympathised with them, and represented their extreme distresses in her fiction. She is radical in taking on their dialect, imagining the realities of their lives, and placing a working woman at the centre of her fiction. If to our eyes her vision remains limited, it was an honest vision, for which she was much criticised in her own time, by her own class.
Selected Works of Virginia Woolf
Автор: Woolf Virginia
Издательство: Wordsworth, 2012
Жанр: Wordsworth
Страниц: 1280 страниц
Загрузил: admin, 13 декабря 2015
Contains: A Room of One's Own, To the Lighthouse, Between the Acts, Three Guineas, Mrs Dalloway, Jacob's Room, The Waves, The Years, Orlando. Mrs Dalloway, the society hostess Clarissa, is giving a party and her thoughts on that one day, and the interior monologues of others with interwoven lives reveal the characters of the central protagonists. To the Lighthouse is the most autobiographical of Virginia Woolf's novels. Based on her early experiences, it touches on childhood and children's perceptions and desires. It is at its most trenchant when exploring adult relationships and the changing class-structure in the period spanning the Great War. Virginia Woolf's Orlando, 'the longest and most charming love letter in literature', playfully constructs the figure of Orlando as the fictional embodiment of Woolf's close friend and lover, Vita Sackville-West. 'I am writing to a rhythm and not to a plot', said Woolf of The Waves. Regarded as one of her greatest and most original works, it conveys the rhythms of life in synchrony with the cycle of nature and the passage of time. In these, as in A Room of One's Own, Between the Acts, Three Guineas, The Years and Jacob's Room, Virginia Woolf displays her genuine humanity and concern for the experiences that enrich and stultify existence. Her delicate artistry and lyrical prose have established her as a writer of sensitivity and profound talent.
Voodoo Tales: The Ghost Stories of Henry S: Whitehead
Автор: Whitehead Henry S.
Издательство: Wordsworth, 2012
Жанр: Wordsworth
Страниц: 704 страницы

'And behind him, like a misshapen black frog, bounded the Thing, its red tongue lolling out of its gash of a mouth, its diminutive blubbery lips drawn back in a murderous snarl'. Let Henry S. Whitehead take you into the mysterious and macabre world of voodoo where beasts invade the mind of man and where lives of the living are racked by the spirits of the dead. In this collection of rare and out of print stories you will encounter the curses of the great Guinea-Snake, the Sheen, the weredog whose very touch means certain death, the curious tale of the 'magicked' mirror, and fiendish manikins who make life a living hell. Included in this festival of shivering fear is the remarkable narrative 'Williamson' which every editor who read the story shied away from publishing. With deceptive simplicity and chilling realism, Whitehead's Voodoo Tales are amongst the most frightening ever written.
Wealth of Nations
Автор: Smith Adam
Издательство: Wordsworth, 2012
Жанр: Wordsworth
Страниц: 1008 страниц
Загрузил: youngpro, 18 июля 2014
Adam Smith (1723-1790) was one of the brightest stars of the eighteenth-century Scottish Enlightenment. An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations was his most important book. First published in London in March 1776, it had been eagerly anticipated by Smith's contemporaries and became an immediate bestseller. That edition sold out quickly and others followed. Today, Smith's Wealth of Nations rightfully claims a place in the Western intellectual canon. It is the first book of modern political economy, and still provides the foundation for the study of that discipline. But it is much more than that. Along with important discussions of economics and political theory, Smith mixed plain common sense with large measures of history, philosophy, psychology, sociology, and much else. Few texts remind us so clearly that the Enlightenment was very much a lived experience, a concern with improving the human condition in practical ways for real people. A masterpiece by any measure, Wealth of Nations remains a classic of world literature to be usefully enjoyed by readers today.

Symposium and the Death of Socrates
Издательство: Wordsworth, 1997
Жанр: Wordsworth
Страниц: 240 страниц
Загрузил: admin, 21 августа 2009
In Symposium, a group of Anthenian aristocrats attend a party held by Agathon to celebrate his victory in the drama festival of the Dionysia. They talk about love until the drunken Alcibiades bursts in, and decides to talk about Socrates instead. Symposium gives a picture of the sparkling society that was Athens at the height of her empire. The other three dialogues in this collection — Apology, Crito and Phaedo — are more sombre. The Athenians, catastrophically defeated in war, have lost their self-confidence and their ability to tolerate what they do not understand. Socrates is put on trial for impiety, found guilty and put to death. Apology is Socrates's speech in his own defence at his trial. Crito explains his refusal to escape when escape could be easily arranged. Phaedo gives an account of Socrates's last day. He and his friends discuss the nature and immortality of the soul until the sun sets and Socrates drinks the hemlock which has been prepared for him.
The Voyage of the Discovery
Автор: Scott Captain Robert Falcon
Издательство: Wordsworth, 2009
Жанр: Wordsworth
Страниц: 672 страницы
Загрузил: velik, 10 сентября 2015
When I received the script of The Voyage of the Discovery I was amazed. I had only to read a few pages to realise that it was literature, unique of its kind... Scott's mind was like wax to receive an impression and like marble to retain it. So wrote Leonard Huxley, and he was not alone in his opinion. When this account of Scott's first Antarctic expedition appeared in 1905 the reviewers recognised it as a masterpiece and the first printing sold out immediately. Scott is best known for his doomed last expedition in 1912, but it was this earlier voyage that truly began the opening up of the Antarctic continent and laid the groundwork for the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration. The record of that voyage is a classic account by a remarkable explorer who was also one of the most talented writers in the field of polar exploration. Scott brings alive for the reader the brilliance of the aurora in the long winter nights, the hunger and danger of sledging trips, the isolation, and the joy of seeing what no human eye had previously seen.

The Cossacks and Other Early Stories
Автор: Tolstoy Leo
Издательство: Wordsworth, 2012
Жанр: Wordsworth
Страниц: 384 страницы
Загрузил: yury-m, 15 сентября 2018
Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace and Anna Karenina, the greatest novels ever written, did not emerge from a vacuum. They were preceded by at least twenty prose works of different kinds, some of them masterpieces in their own right. These stories may be viewed as a fascinating encounter with literary predecessors such as Rousseau and Pushkin, and they are never far removed from autobiography, but in them Tolstoy can be seen forging a strong, new cultural personality. Their virtues lie in local colour, brilliant characterization and dialogue, along with strong narrative interest linked to important ideas and meanings, most of which will re-emerge in the later works. This undervalued area of a great man's writing deserves closer attention, and will reward the reader with unforgettable individuals, issues and situations. In The Cossacks, for example, Tolstoy succeeds in combining a realistic description of the Caucasus with his hero's personal vision of the locality. Nor is this success the only one in this remarkable period. Reading these early stories gives a penetrating insight into the workshop of a towering literary genius.
An Introduction to Psychoanalysis

Sigmund Freud's controversial ideas have penetrated Western culture more deeply than those of any other psychologist. But psychoanalysis was never just a method of treatment, rather a vision of the human condition which has continued to fascinate and provoke long after the death of its originator.
Sense and Sensibility
Автор: Austen Jane
Издательство: Wordsworth, 1992
Жанр: Wordsworth
Страниц: 272 страницы
Загрузил: radius, 25 мая 2009
Полный, неадаптированный текст произведения. 'Young women who have no economic or political power must attend to the serious business of contriving material security'. Jane Austen's sardonic humour lays bare the stratagems, the hypocrisy and the poignancy inherent in the struggle of two very different sisters to achieve respectability. Sense and Sensibility is a delightful comedy of manners in which the sisters Elinor and Marianne represent these two qualities. Elinor's character is one of Augustan detachment, while Marianne, a fervent disciple of the Romantic Age, learns to curb her passionate nature in the interests of survival.
