David Hockney (b. 1937) has always been closely associated with Pop Art and California, where he has lived for much of his life. This major study of his work, published to accompany the exhibition showing at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, redefines him as an important painter of the English countryside, presenting his recent landscapes for the first time. In an attempt to renew contemporary art, Hockney has returned to painting in the open air, observing with honesty and intensity the scenery of his childhood in East Yorkshire. Marco Livingstone explores this bold departure in the context of Hockney's sixty-year career, while other contributors address the artists place in the landscape tradition, his recent video works and their relationship to English landscape film-making, and his ongoing use of new technologies. Illustrated with paintings, iPad drawings and video stills, many of which have never been seen before, this landmark publication confirms David Hockney as one of the greatest artists of his generation. |

Arnold Odermatt joined the police force in his native Swiss canton of Nidwalden in 1948, when he was just in his twenties. When he retired more than 40 years later as Vice Commander of the department and Lieutenant Director of Traffic Police, he found sudden, unexpected fame as an artist. His photographs of the vehicle accidents that had been part of his professional life, collected in the book Karambolage, led to international recognition: His work was shown at the 2001 Armory Fair and Venice Biennale, followed by solo exhibitions at The Art Institute of Chicago in 2002 and at the Fotomuseum Winterthur in 2004. In addition to his car crash photographs, Odermatt has also used his camera to re-create scenes from his days in law enforcement, spurred on by the fears of the shrinking Nidwalden police force, in hopes of enticing the village youth to join its increasingly unfashionable ranks. On Duty collects these images, which are populated by Odermatt's colleagues reenacting their daily adventures, in a compelling sequence of colorful tableaux. It is a strange and impressive document offering unexpected insight into a hidden world. |

In 2004 the Centro Cultural de Belem in Lisbon initiated the exhibition project MIRROR, MIRROR, Portugal as seen by 13 Magnum photographers. The book which accompanies the exhibition is a reflection on Portugal featuring the personal visions of 13 photographers whose photographs were taken at different moments in time, under specific circumstances. One of the first Magnum photographers to visit Portugal was Henri Cartier-Bresson who later included some of his pictures in his famous book Les Europeens, published in 1955 by Teriade. In 1974 and 1975 Gilles Peress, Guy Le Querrec, and Jean Gaumy went to Portugal in order to report on the Portuguese revolution. However, the focus of the exhibition is not only to gather icons from the Magnum collection: Susan Meiselas, Josef Koudelka and Miguel Rio Branco have received special cartes blanches from the Centro Cultural de Belem to create work conveying contemporary visions of Portugal. Whereas Susan Meiselas reported on the social reality of immigrants from former Portugese colonies, Josef Koudelka revisited the Portuguese landscape with a his lyrical geometry and Miguel Rio Branco collected traces from Portugal's history in order to compose a tableaux. The book will feature about 100 images by the following photographers: Bruno Barbey, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Thomas Hoepker, Jean Gaumy, Bruce Gilden, Josef Koudelka, Guy Le Querrec, Susan Meiselas, Inge Morath, Martin Parr, Gilles Peress, Gueorgui Pinkhassov, Miguel Rio Branco. |

Contemporary art speaks directly to the important questions of our time, as well as to the rapidly changing landscapes of identity. It is both a mirror of contemporary society and a window through which we view and deepen our understanding of life as it exists today. Who are today's artists? What are they thinking about? How do they describe their work? Why do they do what they do? These are some of the questions addressed in Art: 21 Art in the Twenty-First Century 6, companion volume to the sixth season of the Emmy nominated, two-time Peabody Award-winning PBS series, which introduces thirteen artists who draw on a variety of subjects, experiences, and aesthetic influences to create their work. The book echoes the style and philosophy of the television series, presenting the artists without interpretive mediation through excerpts of interviews juxtaposed with illustrations of their work. |

Drawings from the Gulag consists of 130 drawings by Danzig Baldaev describing the history, horror and peculiarities of the Gulag system from its inception in 1918. Baldaevs father, a respected ethnographer, taught him techniques to record the tattoos of criminals in St Petersburgs notorious Kresty prison, where he worked as a guard. He was reported to the KGB who unexpectedly supported his work, allowing him the opportunity to travel across the former USSR. Witnessing scenes of everyday life in the Gulag, he chronicled this previously closed world from both sides of the wire. With every vignette, Baldaev brings the characters he depicts to vivid life: from the lowest zek (inmate) to the most violent tattooed vor (thief), all the practices and inhabitants of the Gulag system are depicted here in incredible, and often shocking, detail. In documenting the attitude of the authorities to those imprisoned, and the transformation of those citizens into survivors or victims of the Gulag system, this graphic novel vividly depicts methods of torture and mass murder undertaken by the administration, as well as the atrocities committed by criminals on their fellow inmates. |

Playgrounds are places where children can slide, swing, jump, skate, climb and do all those things which their motor control development requires. Furthermore, the social skills which children acquire on the playground develop into capabilities which they take with them into adulthood. Studies show that playgrounds are among the most important locations for young people outside the settings of home and school. This title is dedicated to the international kidscapes of today and presents the most innovative concepts and current trends of this demanding area of design. The projects lead to the knowledge that constructive collaboration on the part of architects and designers, landscape architects and municipal planners, artists and toy manufacturers is the key to the well-being of the children. |

Classic modern design never goes out of style: it is merely retired or subtly adapted to its given place and time. Having surveyed handwritten, new vintage, and new ornamental tendencies in type and lettering, graphic-design guru Steven Heller now turns his encyclopedic gaze on Modernism. New Modernist Type reveals how a graphic language of simplicity and economy has impacted contemporary design. Hundreds of examples by international designers are grouped into three thematic chapters: Old Modern (when the machine age influenced graphic design), Playful Modern (wit, humor, and transformation), and Meta Modern (typography as icon and symbol). An historical introduction places today 's tendencies in context, and the reference section features a list of designers websites. |
