«A wide-ranging and detailed survey dedicated to the protagonists of the contemporary art scene in Eastern Europe. As the title suggests, history, memory and identity are the principle «open questions» for many countries in Eastern Europe that have over the past twenty years seen their course in history change radically in the wake of the fall of the Berlin wall on November 9th, 1989. The catalogue includes twenty-nine artists from eighteen countries, including the Russian Federation, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Serbia and Croatia, many of which are presented here for the first time in a survey comprising more than 150 photographs, films and video-installations. History Memory Identity marks a continuation of Asian Dub Photography (Skira, 2009) dedicated to Far Eastern art.»

The model for this approach is the world leader GROHE, which has been working for some time in the field of ecological solutions for water resources. The GROHE idea is not simply to deal with the economical and functional side of water supply but also to consider the pleasurable aspects of water and to reflect that consideration with the high design requirements of many architects. This volume presents buildings of different typologies with GROHE water technology solutions. The book also features interviews and essays by experts who explain the current state of sustainable water use water developments as well as the interaction of water technology and design.

Goldsmiths were among the most highly regarded craftsmen in the medieval world, making extravagant objects from precious gold and silver, often enriched with rare stones and engraved gems. As well as royal and aristocratic patrons, much of their work was created for the Church, as it was thought that such display praised God. For this reason many pieces that survive today were preserved in the treasuries of churches, where they escaped the ravages of history. In this wonderfully illustrated book, John Cherry explores the goldsmiths craft through works in the British Museum and from collections around the world. The British Museum holds some of the most splendid examples of medieval goldsmiths work in the world, including the peerless Royal Gold Cup. With a description of the craft, its reputation in medieval times, and the raw materials used, the author offers an intriguing introduction to the expertise of the workmanship and the success of the trade. Who were the goldsmiths? Who did they work for? What influenced them, and how much freedom were they given to design? These questions and others are explored in this classic book, now redesigned in a lovely new format and illustrated throughout with new colour photography.

«This spectacular book brings together work made by Andy Goldsworthy in Britain, France, the United States, Australia and Japan between 1990 and 1993. It includes works that involve not only stone of various kinds slate, limestone, sandstone, river boulders but also leaves, flowers, sand, clay and scrap steel. A riverside slab of rock in St Louis, Missouri, glows with the colours of autumn leaves, becomes part of a wall, acquires an overall covering of green leaves, and is cradled in a nest of branches. In a forest in the Lake District, a wall snakes its way through the trees. Sandstone arches progress across the floor of a Dumfriesshire quarry. A dead tree in the Australian outback is miraculously clothed in rust-red sand. «Stone: Andy Goldsworthy» offers an unparalleled opportunity to appreciate the extraordinary breadth of the artists output and to understand more about this exceptionally talented sculptor whose work is accorded worldwide recognition.»

A rare discovery of more than 150 previously unpublished photographs in black and white and in color, from a legendary photographer. Despite strong personal and professional ties in the U.S.--Henry Miller, Harper's Bazaar's Carmel Snow, and Edward Steichen, who featured Brassai's work in many MoMA exhibitions--Brassai remained reticent about travel to the U.S. until 1957 when Holiday magazine offered generous compensation (and artistic freedom) to photograph New York and Louisiana. From the first symbolic image of this voyage--the Statue of Liberty appearing over the ship's prow--Brassai came under the spell of America and his photographs innately captured his new perspective. In New York, he was captivated by the graphic skyscrapers and the rhythmic to-ing and fro-ing of the crowds. Unlike his static photographs of Paris--posing prostitutes, embracing lovers, sleeping street people--here he captured sequences of movement--children playing, fashionable women parading by, or the effects of light filtering through the urban architecture. In Louisiana, he continued to photograph more languorous sequences, but here he reveled in color--the copper skin of sunbathers, the pastel tones of prom dresses, the vibrant neon of amusement park attractions. The New Orleans music halls, nightlife, women, and exotic vegetation recall scenes from 1930s Paris. This exuberant study of 1950s America offers the reader unprecedented access to Brassai's work, including previously unpublished color photography.

Balance: European Hardcore Music

Borne out of the American punk scene of the late 1970s, hardcore music raged through the '80s, spreading to towns and cities across the globe. Balance focuses on the current European scene, documenting the lives of musicians who strike a balance between their day jobs and this vital musical force. From tattooists in Portugal to miners in Poland, Balance uncovers the twin lives of those working to support their passion. Hardcore has always been more than just music and although the performers and fans across the continent speak different languages and live in different places, they are tied to each other through a culture that transcends borders. Capturing the chaos of the mosh pit, the monotony of the office, and the sheer energy of this music, Balance pays homage to the bands, promoters, designers, and supporters who have made the decision to a live a hardcore life. As Ian Glasper writes in the book’s foreword, “This music resides in our hearts and minds and colors everything we do, everything we touch, everything we are. Even if you’ve moved on musically, hardcore punk informs the decisions you make for the rest of your life . . . And that’s because at the end of the day, as great as the music is, it’s about the relationships you forge with those around you.”
Diane Arbus: Untitled

«Untitled is the only volume of Diane Arbus' work devoted exclusively to a single project. The photographs were taken at residences for the mentally retarded between 1969 and 1971, in the last years of Arbus' life. Although she considered making a book on the subject, the vast majority of these pictures have remained unpublished until now. These photographs achieve a lyricism and an emotional purity that sets them apart from all her other accomplishments: «Finally what I've been searching for,» she wrote at the time. The product of her consistently unflinching regard for reality as she found it, Untitled may well be Arbus' most transcendent, most romantic vision. It is a celebration of the singularity and connectedness of each and every one of us, and demands of us what it demanded of her: the courage to see things as they are and the grace to permit them to simply be. For Diane Arbus, this is what making pictures was all about. Untitled includes an afterword by Doon Arbus, the photographer's daughter, who writes that the intent of these works «wasn't. . . about who or what she saw, but about the experience of seeing it and the power of her photographs to make that experience visible.»

«In 1999 the Xunta de Galicia called an International Architecture Competition to build the City of Culture of Galicia on Mount Gaiás in Santiago de Compostela. Twelve proposals by renowned national and international architects' studios were initially submitted to this competition for ideas. The architects who submitted their ideas for defining the architectural complex and its uses were Ricardo Bofill, Peter Eisenman, Manuel Gallego Jorreto, Annette Gigon and Mike Guyer, Steve Holl, Rem Koolhaas, Daniel Libeskind, Juan Navarro Baldeweg, Jean Nouvel, Dominique Perrault, César Portela, and Santiago Calatrava (who later withdrew his project). Out of all these ideas, the final project to be selected for development was the design by Eisenman Architects, as — to quote the Jury — it was, «unique both in concept and plasticity, and exceptionally in tune with the site's location». Located in Santiago de Compostela, a historic city that is an emblem of the European cultural tradition and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985, the City of Culture of Galicia stands on top of Mount Gaiás, a formidable architectural landmark for the new century. Conceived as a large-scale cultural hub devoted to hosting the best of cultural expressions of Galicia, Spain, Europe, Latin America and the World, this new «city» will contribute with its inclusive and pluralistic approach to meeting the challenges of the information and knowledge society. Its unique buildings, connected up by streets and plazas equipped with state-of-the-art technology, create a space of excellence for reflection, debate and actions oriented towards the preservation of heritage and memory, towards study, research, experimentation, production and dissemination in the field of literature and thinking, music, drama, dance, film, the visual arts, audiovisual creation and communication. This book invites readers to stroll around a new city where past, present, and future cultures coexist: «A new cultural Babylon will open its doors to readers.»

A landmark study in the history of modern art—revised, updated, and expanded. Conceived by four of the most influential art historians of our time, this groundbreaking book has now been updated and expanded to include the most recent developments in contemporary art. The original authors have been joined by David Joselit to provide the most comprehensive history of art in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries ever published. More than 120 articles are presented in a year-by-year structure, with each focusing on a crucial event—from the creation of a seminal work to the opening of a major exhibition—to tell the myriad stories of art from 1900 to the present. Key turning points and breakthroughs in modernism are explored, as are the antimodernist reactions that proposed alternative visions of art and the world. The book’s flexible structure and extensive cross-referencing allow readers to follow the many developments in the art world, from the influence of surrealism to the emergence of minimalism. A four-part introduction outlines the methodologies governing the discipline of art history, and two roundtable discussions examine the questions raised by the past while looking ahead to the future.
