The first book devoted to this influential twentieth-century French couturier. Lucien Lelong was a central figure in French fashion from the 1920s to the 1950s, and his designs were in many ways precursors of contemporary fashion shapes and developments. Noted for his skill, exquisite workmanship, and beautiful fabrics, Lelong and his house promoted a fluid, minimalist, elegant look. Lelong blended modern design with a strong business sense and was influential for both his fashions and his entrepreneurship. He was one of the earliest designers to diversify into lingerie, accessories, and perfumes, and in 1934 he introduced a luxury ready-to-wear line. During the Occupation in World War II, he was instrumental in persuading the Germans to allow French couture houses to remain in Paris rather than moving to Berlin. This wonderfully illustrated history of Lelong and his house chronicles the period and its leading personalities, artists, and designers. Lelong's clients included Colette, Greta Garbo, Gloria Swanson, and Rose Kennedy; Balmain, Dior, and Givenchy apprenticed with him; and Horst, Beaton, Hoyningen Huene, Man Ray, and Lee Miller photographed his models. 134 illustrations, 48 in color. |

Where cafes have traditionally been viewed as places principally to enjoy a coffee, they have evolved to show a broad range of multifunctional purposes and amenities: They can, for instance, exist as cozy lunch-time meeting spots before abruptly transforming into vibrant late-night bars after sundown. Cafe! Best of Coffee Shop Design shows the wide scope of different cafe concepts, including coffee bars as integral parts of cutting-edge multipurpose buildings, flagship stores and traditional shops with a contemporary twist. The 40 projects featured comprise an extensive variety of designs and styles, ranging from minimalist, strict and reduced, to opulent and extravagant. |

This remarkable volume features and analyzes a private collection of some 130 textiles, mainly from the period between 1900 and 1940. An introduction explains the place of the kimono in Japanese society, including the essential cultural and historical background, but the heart of the book is formed by the photographs of the individual textiles, focusing on the decoration techniques and other main characteristics. No doubt women's kimono are the most artistic ones as a result of their bold and colorful designs. But probably the most surprising garments are the men's under kimono's, since little has been published about them. Some designs show a longing for the past, but others are decorated with contemporary motifs, such as the popular baseball game and the beginning of the Second World War. The children's section features the contrasting expectations for girls and boys in Japanese society: sweet decorations on girls' kimono's, strong animals or samurai on boys' textiles. The book is generously illustrated with three hundred full-color photographs taken especially for this book and all never before published. |
