The design freedom of the contour and the plastic volume of the blob have long since superseded the purely orthogonal towers of the past. A global view to the most significant projects of recent years and the most spectacular towers still under construction as well as path breaking experimental sketches are presented by means of texts, planning material and illustrations. Comprehensive tables give the most important performance markers and provide information about the central subjects specific to this type of building, such as vertical development, safety and energy concepts. |

Art Deco buildings, with their highly ornate façades and dramatic forms, are a vital part of our surroundings. This wide-ranging exploration of Art Deco architectural design embraces many different times and places in its summary of the movement’s origins, development and influence. Various types of architecture were termed Art Deco, and their antecedents might include Arts and Crafts, fin-de-siècle Vienna, Cubism, Expressionism and the Bauhaus. Patricia Bayer shows that Art Deco masterpieces can be seen and admired worldwide: from the skyscrapers of New York City to imperial dwellings in Tokyo; from Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Battersea Power Station to movie theatres and diners across America. Post-modernism now uses its motifs and idioms, and many of the original buildings still survive, fully restored to their former glory. Sumptuously illustrated, this is a comprehensive guide to the best-loved of all 20th-century architectural styles. |

«By the time of the Paris exhibition of 1925 from which Art Deco took its name, the idea that an interior and its furnishings should form a complete design — a «total look» — dominated the thinking of both designers and their clients. Studios began to emerge to serve the needs of a design and style-conscious middle-class. This text displays the flourishing design ingenuity through contemporary photographs and illustrations of selected interiors complemented with modern photographs of individual pieces. It traces the sylistic evolution and dominant motifs of Deco, the triumph of the 1925 exhibition and the pure «high style» of the Paris ensembliers; the growth of Streamline Moderne offshoots in the US; the international revival of Deco as a decorative style for a new generation of post-modern designers; and the restoration of many Art Deco interiors to their original state.» |

This is a visually stunning, definitive survey with objects – furniture, ceramics, metalwork, textiles and works on paper – from all over Europe, Scandinavia and the United States. At the turn of the last century, the Arts and Crafts movement transformed not only how objects looked but also how people looked at objects. It provided a framework for essential issues that are still debated today: the conflict between standardization and individuality, the question of whether a one-of-a-kind handcrafted object is superior to a mass-produced one, and the problem of defining what kind of design most benefits society. The book features masterworks by the best-known designers of the period, such as William Morris, M. H. Baillie Scott, Henry Van de Velde, Peter Behrens, Josef Hoffmann, Eliel Saarinen, Greene and Greene, and Frank Lloyd Wright, as well as lesser-known examples that have never been displayed together before. |

Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa's forty-year career has become legendary. Beyond Bawa considers his continuing influence through the work of contemporary architects working in the region. Bawa achieved the harmonious and pleasurable fusion of local building traditions with modern forms. Throughout south Asia his legacy lives on in contemporary architectural practice and remains an important source of inspiration for generations of architects. Bawa was the principal force behind what is today known globally as ‘tropical modernism’, and examples of his ideas can be found in Sri Lanka, Singapore and Bali but also in resorts and residences throughout wider Asia. An overview of Bawa and his contribution to contemporary architecture is followed by presentations of twenty-four contemporary architects, ranging from well-known practitioners such as Australian Kerry Hill to local talents such as Anjalendran. They reveal the long-lasting significance of Bawa’s uniquely sensitive approach to building and the landscape. This is the ideal companion to Geoffrey Bawa: The Complete Works and is an excellent introduction to current architectural practice in south Asia. |

Camouflage has become a global cult in today’s fashion and design world. Its fascinating story tells of the interplay between military developments and the worlds of art, design and popular culture on the other. The animal kingdom provides examples of all the essential principles of camouflage: the chameleon, whose colours change to merge with its setting; the zebra, whose vivid stripes disrupt its outline and make it more difficult for predators to sight from a distance; the stick insect that pretends to be what it’s not. New creativity in the military art of disguise was spurred in the First World War by the threats of aerial reconnaissance and long-range enemy fire. By the 1970s, disruptive pattern uniforms were worn by soldiers of most nations, and had become as much a way of identifying allegiance as of protecting from detection. Today, as modern advances in imaging techniques make straightforward visual deception redundant, scientists are developing super high-tech solutions. But camouflage has flourished in peace as well as in war. Artists and designers have explored the themes and extremes of camouflage and optical illusion, while camouflage patterns in clothing and accessories have filtered from the street to the catwalk and back again. This wonderfully stylish and appealing book accompanies a major exhibition at the Imperial War Museum. Together they are a dazzling revelation of camouflage’s power in nature, war and design. |

The work of nearly thirty of the world's top up-to-the-minute illustrators is organized into three different styles. The sensualists — for example, François Berthoud — adhere to a fluid, fine-arts tradition. Others, such as Jean-Philippe Delhomme, focus on characters: smoky-eyed gamines and sophisticated 50s-style divas. And here, for the first time in any survey, is the computer-generated work of the leading technocrats, among whom are Graham Rounthwaite and Jason Brooks. As well as work drawn from artists’ collections and from international fashion and style magazines, Fashion Illustration Now includes scores of specially commissioned illustrations. With biographical and contact information for each artist, this is a guide for media and fashion industry professionals, an inspirational sourcebook for students and a must-have for anyone interested in fashion now. |
