Prior to the Revolution of 1917, Russia had one of the greatest traditions of private art collecting in the world. The first great collections were created by the aristocracy, and then by the newly rich industrialists and businessmen in the 19th century. Finally came the 'Merchant Princes', who were among the first and most important collectors of Impressionist and Modern Art. After 1917, all these collections were confiscated by the State, put into reserves in Moscow and Leningrad, and eventually integrated into the collections of the State Hermitage, the Tretiakov Museum, the Pushkin Museum and other institutions. This beautiful, all-colour book recreates the collections as they were, describes how they were made and by whom, and offers not only stunning photographs of the great treasures themselves, but portraits of the owners, illustrations of the exteriors and interiors of their palaces as they were when the collections were in situ. Superb images of the cream of each collection follows each one's history. |

Since its first publication this book has been hailed as the most up-to-date and wide-ranging history of art ever published in a single volume. This quote from Andrew Graham Dixon describes the book: 'Spanning continents and millennia, ranging from man's earliest cave paintings to the works of Picasso and beyond, this is a hugely ambitious book. But thanks to the breadth of their scholarship, the depth of their enthusiasm and the enviable freshness of their writing, Honor and Fleming triumphantly accomplish the herculean task they have set themselves. Sympathetically expanded by Michael Archer, who brings the story forward into the twenty-first century, this thumping slab of tome is without doubt the most compelling total history of art ever written'. This Revised Seventh Edition expands the original coverage by embracing new developments in archeology and art historical research, and in particular contemporary art historian Michael Archer has greatly expanded the authors discussion of the art world over the past two decades, providing a new perspective on the latest developments shaping our cultural history. |

«In 1955, Henri Cartier-Bresson published «The Europeans», a portrait of the continent documenting a landscape shadowed by the war. In this book, the photographer brings together images spanning the years from the late 1920's to the early 1970's. He has travelled across Europe, from the Scandinavian shield to the Irish bogs, in order to capture what it means to be European. Beyond nationalism and the particular characteristics of each culture and nation, he has found evidence of a greater identity, a likeness shared by the people and the landscape. His photographs seek to speak of the same daily ceremony, of the ongoing business of living for people across Europe, whether Polish priests in alb or cassock, or Abruzzi peasants shrouded in the black of their cloaks and hats.» |

A signage system is much more than just a set of signposts and symbols. As well as its practical application, it helps to create an identity for a space and can add decorative flair to any built environment. Here, Andreas Uebele calls on his own wealth of design experience to explore signage as a point where graphic design and architecture come together. The book showcases great examples of signage design worldwide, ranging from museums and schools to transport systems, with an emphasis on the most original approaches to tackling the task. This is not only an indispensable handbook for communications designers but a must for architects, interior designers and graphic artists who are keen to get a better insight into this fascinating but often overlooked aspect of modern design. |

Since signage systems are created to provide orientation, they must be universally legible and understood by people of all ages and culture. Signs must show the way, and also present the proper information at the proper location. By making effective use of graphics, colors and shapes, a signage system helps to create an identity for spaces. Signage Designs showcases a great variety of current examples from across the world, indoor and outdoor, ranging from individual buildings like museums, hospitals and stadiums, to larger contexts like subway systems, town districts or entire cities. This title is an essential reference for designers involved in communications, architects, interior designers and indeed for creative persons in all sectors. |

When he arrived in Paris, Koudelka had already produced two outstanding works of reportage. One documented the Prague Spring, while the other, on gypsies, could almost have been an ethnological study had its images not been charged with so much emotion. Unknown in 1970, he rose to become one of the most powerful photographers of his day. This book shows that in the lands of exile through which he travels with his amazing urge to see, Koudelkas own particular talent has been affirmed and expanded. |
