Robert Mapplethorpe's influence as an artist has grown steadily since his untimely death in 1989. In honor of his work, seven extraordinary contemporary artists — David Hockney, Vik Muniz, Catherine Opie, Sterling Ruby, Cindy Sherman, Hedi Slimane, and Robert Wilson — each in turn reviewed Mapplethorpe's entire body of work over the course of seven years to select those that personally resonated. The result was the groundbreaking series of exhibitions documented in this book, which also features intensive interviews conducted by Richard Flood, noted curator of the New Museum of Contemporary Art (New York). This beautiful and compelling presentation offers bold new insights into Mapplethorpe's genius and his lasting impact on contemporary art. |

As humans we are programmed to instinctively respond to beauty. It has an indescribable quality that lifts our spirits and opens our hearts. Yet while this intangible essence can be hard to define, it's nonetheless instantly recognizable. Over the course of his illustrious career, photographer Kenneth Willardt has captured an impressive array of images that epitomize our contemporary concept of beauty. Although varied in their theme and subject matter, these finely structured compositions all possess a timeless elegance that draws us in. Equally at home in both black and white and color images, viewers of Willardt's photography will be struck by the intimacy that characterizes his work. It will be no surprise, then, to learn that the subjects displayed here are celebrities that fascinate him or models he knows as friends. With this freedom and informality between photographer and models, the images are intensely direct and real. |

We're all aware of getting older and may obsess over how our bodies gradually change with the years. Have you ever wanted to step back a few years and reconnect with a younger self? Would it be amusing or just plain creepy? Back to the Future is a book by Argentinian artist Irina Werning, who takes old pictures and then mimics them years later with the subjects dressed, styled, and posed exactly as they were in the original. The results are quirky and a fascinating insight into the aging process. Surprisingly, the subjects often slip seamlessly into their old persona, so that even though their physical appearance may have changed, the spirit is still plainly the same. |

Boy meets girl: This eternal and inexhaustible theme is the topic of the Zeiss Art Calendar. Zeiss, the leading manufacturer of optical systems, invites the very best photographers to take part each year. From Wim Wenders in 2009 to Douglas Kirkland in 2015, the photos are as complex and multifaceted as male-female relationships themselves; the lines between romance, drama, and comedy quickly blur. The people in front of the camera are also tops in their fields — actors like Michael J. Fox or Alec Baldwin meet super-models like Amber Valletta or Toni Garrn. They all make this book a diverse collection of imaginative stories told through pictures. Interviews with the participants further enrich the book with a behind-the-scenes look at the project. |

What is innovation? The dictionary defines it as renewal through the use of new processes and technologies. In advertising, everything is an innovation. But what is truly innovative? Since 1930, the Pininfarina design firm of Turin, Italy, has been answering that question. This is where the Cistalia 202 was developed, the first vehicle to be added to MoMA's permanent collection. The list goes on: the interior of the new stadium for Juventus Turin, the Nash Healey Spider seen in Billy Wilder's Sabrina, and the legendary Ferrari Dino 246 and Ferrari Testarossa. However, Pininfarina is not resting on its laurels, but blasting full speed ahead into the future with an expanded portfolio while honoring its heritage. Whether it's a solution for sustainable mobility, interior designs, or household gadgets, all Pininfarina projects bear an unmistakable signature. To visually celebrate the history and influence of Pininfarina, there is no one better suited than a man who has made his own unmistakable mark on automotive photography. Gunther Raupp has spent 30 years photographing cars for Ferrari's official calendars, which enjoy a cult following among the experts. He has two successful books with teNeues, the most recent being The Ferrari Book. As a star photographer and connoisseur of industrial design, Raupp showcases a company that embodies true italianita. |
