Together with Holbein, Anthony van Dyck (1599 — 1641) is one of the most important names in British pre-18th century art. Born in Antwerp he was a precocious talent, rising swiftly to become the chief assistant to Peter Paul Rubens, then Northern Europe's most prominent painter. His importance to British art cannot be overstated; during the turbulent years of the reign of Charles I, he single-handedly reinvented portrait painting, leaving behind a legacy that would influence later generations.Van Dyck first came to Britain in 1620 to work for James I. Between 1621 and 1627 he worked in Italy, adding to his clientele of wealthy patrons. Charles I recognised in van Dyck the potential to be the perfect creator of the royal image. The artist returned to London in April 1632 and was almost immediately knighted and provided with an enviable property and pension, becoming the chief painter of the court. His portraits of the royal family and courtiers, imbued with an understated authority and relaxed elegance, were an instant success. His pictures of Charles especially seemed to represent the king as both a powerful sovereign and 'nature's gentleman'. His popularity stemmed from his ease when moving in aristocratic circles, and his talent for flattering almost all subjects. Thomas Gainsborough famously said on his deathbed 'We are all going to heaven and van Dyck is of the company'. The authors will not only explore van Dyck's years in England, but also his enduring influence on British art and culture in the centuries following his death, reflected in the way 18th and 19th century British sitters wanted their portraits to convey the gravitas and sophistication the earlier painter had mastered so well. Extensively illustrated, this is the most thorough examination ever published of van Dyck's English sojourn and the influence it had on the cultural life of the nation.

Susan Hiller was born in the United States in 1940. Rather than attending art school she studied anthropology, moving to London in the early 1960s where she became an artist. Employing a wide variety of media, Hiller has done much in recent decades to redefine what a work of art can be. Much of her work is centred on the subconscious mind and ideas of the paranormal present in cultures around the world. Specific works have investigated auras, extra sensory perception, close encounters, dreams and automatic writing. Many are large-scale installations, variously employing film, audio, video and projection. She makes use of found material, ranging from overlooked aspects of popular culture like wallpaper and postcards, to audio interviews with members of the public. Comprehensive and extensively illustrated, this book will cover Hiller's entire career. It will include an introductory essay by Tate curator Ann Gallagher; a conversation between the critics Guy Brett, Yves-Alan Bois and the artist; and, fresh perspectives on her work from Jorg Heiser, Alexandra Kokoli and Jan Verwoert. Also reprinting key, previously published responses to Hiller by critics, this will be the most thorough and up to date survey of this extraordinary artist yet published.

Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama (b. 1929) is arguably Japan's most famous living artist. Her originality, innovation and powerful desire to communicate have propelled her through a career that has spanned six decades. During this time, Kusama has explored painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, collage, film and video, performance and installation, as well as product design. From the late 1950s to the early 1970s Kusama lived in New York and was at the forefront of many artistic innovations in the city. Returning to Japan in her forties, she rebuilt her career, waiting years for the international recognition she has recently achieved. Now in her eightieth year, she continues to make art, extending the range of her large-scale, dazzling installations and relentlessly hand-painting extensive series of minutely detailed figurative fantasy paintings. Kusama has exhibited widely around the world, including representing Japan at the Venice Biennale, and her work is in many major collections. Accompanying the first major retrospective exhibition of the artist's work to be staged in the UK, this lavishly illustrated book features an introductory essay by Tate curator Frances Morris as well as four other substantial essays by leading international critics. Topics covered include Kusama's time in New York, her career after her return to Japan, her installation works and an exploration of her art from a psychoanalytical point of view.

There's nothing quite like Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Described by The Times on its first publication in 1865 as an excellent piece of nonsense, this inspired tale of a young girl's adventures in a strange and magical world has gone on to become one of the most popular books ever written, translated into over 125 languages and said to be the most frequently quoted book after the Bible, Koran and Shakespeare. In Tove Jansson, the story of Alice finds an illustrator worthy of its enchantment and surreal beauty. Jansson is renowned worldwide for her hugely successful Moomin books. What is less well known is that in 1966 she devoted her unique gifts as an illustrator to recreating the remarkable world of this most famous of children's characters. Over forty years after she presented Lewis Carroll's masterpiece to a Scandinavian audience, Tove Jansson's beautifully illustrated edition of the original text of this classic work is finally made available to an English-speaking audience.
The Turner Book

J.M.W. Turner was a fascinating and enigmatic figure. Both astonishingly prolific and extraordinarily innovative, he is widely seen as the greatest British landscape painter of them all, anticipating and surpassing the Impressionists in his dramatic interpretations of the effects of light and colour. The Turner Book goes beyond the usual interpretations of the artist, revealing the extraordinary self-belief and ambition that allowed him to continue steadfastly with his experimentation in the face of hostile critical attack. The book examines in detail key works and the techniques by which Turner realised them and features revealing extracts from his notebooks, travel journals and poetry. Beautifully illustrated with both famous and unknown works and ranging over the entire course of the artist's career, this is the essential guide to Turner's life and work. Sam Smiles is Professor of Art History at the University of Plymouth at Exeter and the author of numerous acclaimed books, including J.M.W. Turner, Two-way Traffic: British Art and Italian Art 1880-1980 and The Image of Antiquity: Ancient Britain and the Romantic Imagination.

J.M.W. Turner was an original and prolific painter who produced effects such as dissolving form, rendering diaphanous expanses of light, and using colour with subtlety and control. Turner used not only his powers of natural observation, but was also intensely involved with the culture of his times, using landscape as a vehicle for ruminations on society, politics, and the human condition. This work assesses the range and complexity of Turner's work, investigating his artistic and literary influences and interpreting his political views. However, it focuses primarily on describing the evolution of his approach techniques — from his early detailed topographical watercolours to his later almost abstract paintings, which foreshadowed modernism.

Marc Chagall (1887 — 1985) is one of the great artists of the last century. Bringing together more than sixty paintings and a selection of works on paper from across the world, Chagall: Modern Master takes a fresh look at this compelling artist who created some of the most poetic and enduring images of the twentieth century. Accompanying the first major touring exhibition of the work of his work in the UK in fifteen years it explores Chagall's development from the 'naive' folkloristic narratives in his early work, towards his unique style combining fauve, cubist, expressionist and suprematist influences while reflecting his native Jewish Russian culture. Chagall: Modern Master will focus on the artist's time in Paris before the First World War, his visit to Berlin and his exhibition there in 1914, and the years he spent in his native Russia around the time of the Revolution in 1917, all experiences which reinforced his highly personal visual language. The universal, timeless themes of these early works — including love, suffering and death — alongside self-portraits and depictions of the circus, music and peasants, recurred and formed the core of his art for the remainder of his long career.

The Art of the Pre-Raphaelites
Автор: Prettejohn Elizabeth
Издательство: Tate Publishing, 2007
Жанр: Tate Publishing
Страниц: 304 страницы
Загрузил: stalker1965, 16 февраля 2010
In 1848, seven inexperienced young artists banded together to form the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, one of the first and most distinctive group movements in modern art. A century and a half later, their art still has the power to shock, as well as fascinate its audiences. Through the detailed analysis of the materials, techniques, and working pratices of the artists, this lavishly illustrated book examines how Pre-Raphaelite pictures compel the viewer to see more, and more vividly, than traditional painting styles. This intensity of observation reinforces the distinctive subject matter of the pictures: the natural world and the human model, gender identities and sexual relationships, debates on politics, science and religion. Elizabeth Prettejohn is widely acknowledged to be a leading authority on the Pre-Raphaelites, and The Art of the Pre-Raphaelites is seen as a classic introduction to the movement. Outstandingly successful as a hardback, it is now published in a new, affordable format by public demand.

The Commissar Vanishes: The Falsification of Photographs and Art
Автор: King David
Издательство: Tate Publishing, 2014
Жанр: Tate Publishing
Страниц: 232 страницы
Загрузил: valentina632, 13 октября 2018
The Commissar Vanishes offers a chilling look at how Joseph Stalin manipulated the science of photography to advance his own political career and to erase the memory of his victims. On Stalin's orders, purged rivals were airbrushed from group portraits, and crowd scenes were altered to depict even greater legions of the faithful. For example, a 1919 photograph showing a large crowd of Bolsheviks clustered around Lenin, became, with the aid of the retoucher, an intimate portrait of Lenin and Stalin sitting alone, and then, in a later version, of Stalin by himself. In each case, the juxtaposition of the original and the doctored images yields a fascinating — and often terrifying and tragic — insight into one of the darkest chapters of modern history.
