This book is devoted to the complex relationship between Russian art and the East — be it the Russian East or the Far East — with special focus on the radical artists who shaped the development of modern art a century ago. The rituals of Siberian shamans, the ancient funerary sculptures from the steppes seen as a crystallized presence of archaic and everlasting forms of worship, Chinese popular prints, Japanese engravings, Theosophic and Anthroposophic theories, and Indian philosophy are but some of the elements that inspired the aesthetic and theoretical pursuits of the new generation of Russian artists and writers just before the October 1917 Revolution. Trompe-l'oeil, a French term meaning to trick, the eye, describes a painting that deceives the spectator into thinking that the objects in it are real, not merely represented. To successfully fool the eye of the viewer, trompe-l'oeil artists choose objects, situations and compositional devices using as little depth as possible. A heightened form of illusionism, the art of trompe-l'oeil flourished from the Renaissance onward. The discovery of perspective in fifteenth-century Italy and advancements in the science of optics in the seventeenth-century Netherlands enabled artists to render objects and spaces with eye-fooling exactitude. Both witty and serious, trompe-l'oeil is a game artists play with spectators to raise questions about the nature of art and perception. |

NPI (New Photography In) is the title of a series dedicated to new emerging photographers at an international level, all of whom are well-known artists between the ages of thirty and forty. Each volume in The New Photography In series is dedicated to emerging young photographers from different countries throughout the world. The first title of this series, New Photography in Britain is dedicated to seventeen emerging English photographers. This publication was created in collaboration with the Royal College of Art in London and explores three main topics: the artist world, their personal feelings towards their world, and their relationship with the world around them. The artists included in this book many of whom have shown their work in important galleries such as Victoria Miro or Maureen Paley, as well as in the collections of the Saatchi Gallery and the Tate Modernare. This is a magnum opus exploring the relationship between art and theatre during the long nineteenth century. This book was conceived to accompany an international exhibition that travelled from Marseille to Rovereto and Toronto. The exhibition aimed to connect elements of the modern tradition with the return to interest in Antiquity that emerged in Europe during the period 1750-1800, fuelled by the discovery of Pompeii and the pioneering theories of Adolphe Appia and Edward Gordon Craig regarding the dematerialization of the stage. This triggered a surge of passion for theatrical performances and for theatre in general. The period begins in the time of Voltaire and Jacques-Louis David and ends with the last vestiges of Symbolism, a century and a half during which European painters took a continuous interest in the parallel development of stagecraft. What emerges is a symbiotic exchange between the imagery of the stage and that of painting. |
