Frank Lloyd Wright presents a stunning overview of the work of this towering American genius, encompassing the entirety of Wright’s long and extraordinarily prolific career. From his earliest work, such as the Home and Studio in Oak Park, IL, of 1889, to the wonderfully evocative textile block houses of Los Angeles of the mid-1920s, to such seminal masterpieces as Fallingwater, of 1935, in the Pennsylvania wilderness, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, of 1956, in New York, the book offers an extraordinarily abundant trove of architectural riches. Featuring more than a hundred discrete works, from the well known to the obscure, expertly discussed in the text of highly respected Wright scholar Kathryn Smith, Frank Lloyd Wright weaves a gorgeous tapestry that will engage the mind and delight the eye. |

Throughout his career, David Hovey has designed spaces for living, exploiting structure and materials to create buildings of strength, simplicity, and grace. The Nature of Dwellings presents a comprehensive view of the seven single-family houses Hovey has designed, three near Chicago and four in Arizona, and relates them to his award-winning portfolio of multifamily housing developments.Lavish suites of photographs reveal the sweep of space through the interiors and the relationship of the houses to the land. Through a series of comments accompanying these photographs, Hovey describes his design intention and the palette of materials that creates a unique solution for each site. These houses merge into the landscape, and, with names like Ravine Bluff, Cloud Chaser, and Shadow Caster, their ties to the land and climate are clear. |

This epic history is the first comprehensive survey of the use of wood in architecture throughout the ages. The book is organized both chronologically and geographically. It features works from the oldest heritage of wooden buildings (Kyoto's Buddhist temples and Scandinavia's pagan-inspired stave churches) to the latest cutting edge designs, proving that wood is on the rise as the preferred material in these ecologically conscious times. Every region of the world with a native tradition of building with wood is carefully examined. In North America, the book demonstrates the European origins of New England's clapboards and saltboxes, and later shows how such sophisticated California architects as Greene & Greene or Bernard Maybeck could blend age-old traditions of the Far East and Switzerland with a Pacific Coast sense of novelty and whimsy. Spectacular and diverse photographs highlight the architectural masterpieces of wooden architecture throughout the world, illustrating that wood is a building material with a deep history as well as a vibrant future. |

«Owen Jones was, and still remains, a highly influential force in the world of architecture and design. His prolific and impressive work—captured here in its various stages through drawings, architectural plans, and photographs—is as current, imaginative, and important now as when it first emerged more than 125 years ago. Owen Jones: Design, Ornament, Architecture & Theory in an Age in Transition fills a serious gap in the history of Victorian design. In his early career Jones was recognized as an authority on Oriental design. In the 1850-s he was commissioned to decorate the interior of Joseph Paxton's magnificent World's Fair Crystal Palace in London. Other signature projects include St. James' Hall, the Crystal Palace Bazaar, Osler's Glass Shop, and Eynsham Hall at Oxford. In 1856 he completed his monumental Grammar of Ornament, which remains one of the most influential works on design ever published and is a source for many artists and designers today. More than just an architect, Jones' skills were applied to designing interiors, books, textiles, furniture, and carpet. His philosophy can most accurately be expressed in his words, «Form without color is like a body without a soul.» |

New Classicism provides an in-depth look at a form of design that appeared lost forever with the rise of modernism in architecture. But now, with an intense revival of interest in classical design, and with the demise in popularity of the subsequent postmodernism, new vigor has infused traditional forms and motifs. Focusing on thirty-four projects by the best classically oriented firms in the United States and Great Britain, New Classicism examines this burgeoning new vogue for the many varieties of traditional classical design, such as Georgian, Palladian, neoclassical, Greek Revival, Empire and Federal, and even classicized forays into the Gothic. |

This volume, with more than 400 reproductions, will be the most comprehensive publication to date on Lucian Freud, covering a span of seventy years and including many works not previously reproduced. The result is a corpus of great works that reveal him to be the premier heir today of Rembrandt, Courbet, and Cézanne. The book includes not only Freud’s paintings but also his sketches, woodcuts, and powerful etchings. While the bulk of his paintings are female nudes, his cityscapes, plant studies, and interiors, executed in his distinctive muted palette and visible brushwork, are all included. Freud, who has lived in London ever since his family left Berlin in 1933 when he was ten, has achieved preeminence through his ruthless perception of the human form. His importance has long been recognized in England, but his present super-celebrity status dates from a retrospective at the Hirshhorn in Washington, D.C., in 1987. William Feaver, painter and for many years art critic for The Observer, provides a unique account of Freud’s preoccupations and achievement. Startling, moving, profoundly entertaining, the book lives up to Freud’s advice to students when getting them to paint self-portraits: “To try and make it the most revealing, telling, and believable object. Something really shameless, you know.” |

With “McMansions” increasingly giving way to “tiny” houses, the desire to downsize and be more ecologically and economically prudent is a concept many are beginning to embrace. Focusing on dwelling spaces all under 1,000 square feet, TINY HOUSES (Rizzoli, April 2009) by Mimi Zeiger aims to challenge readers to take a look at their own homes and consider how much space they actively use. Ranging from tree houses to floating houses, TINY HOUSES features an international collection of over thirty modular and prefab homes, each one embodying “microgreen living”, defined as the creation of tiny homes where people challenge themselves to live “greener” lives. By using a thoughtful application of green living principles, renewable resources for construction, and clever ingenuity, these homes exemplify sustainable living at its best. |

Frank Lloyd Wright's wife, Olgivanna, is famously quoted as saying that My husband seemed to thrive on hardships. From the years 1920 to 1932 Wright's fortunes were at a low ebb; he was plagued by financial, personal, and professional setbacks, but saw the time as one of challenges instead of one of defeat. Unable to find patrons, his imagination led to visionary, often splendid, architectural conceptions that laid the groundwork for the revolutionary architecture he would build in the decades to follow. During this period he designed almost fifty projects, of which only a few were realized, but those few are seen today as among his most important creations. They include the majestic Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, four exquisite textured concrete block houses in Los Angeles, renovations and additions to his beloved home, Taliesin, in Wisconsin, the Octillo Desert Camp in Chandler, Arizona, and his work as design consultant for the lavish Arizona Biltmore Hotel and Cottages in the desert in Phoenix. Rare and unseen photos as well as little-known drawings from this period are on lavish display in this important work on the master architect. |
