«The other side of twentieth-century architectural history in Italy and Europe. The short-lived cultural journal Quadrante transformed the practice of architecture in fascist Italy. Over the course of three years (1933–36), the magazine agitated for an «architecture of the state» that would represent the values and aspirations of the fascist regime, and in so doing it changed the language with which architcts and their clientele addressed the built environment. Quadrante rallied supporters and organized the most prominent practitioners and benefactors of Italian rationalism into a coherent movement that advanced the cause of specific currents of modern architecture in interwar Italy. This volume includes 55 color illustrations from Urs Fischer's Beds and Problem Paintings show that was exhibited at Gagosian Gallery in Los Angeles from February 23rd to April 7th, 2012. This exhibition was the artist's first major solo exhibition with the gallery. Beds and Problem Paintings was designed by the artist, and the images within the book include installation photos from the exhibition, as well as personal photographs taken by the artist. Fischer's bed sculptures--signals of an alternate surrealist world--are sculptural pieces that appear to buckle under the pressure of an invisible force. The problem paintings are vintage publicity headshots, colored and enlarged to a monumental scale then obstructed by silkscreened images such as a bolt or a banana, presenting a clash of representational systems For his series of diminutive mirrored chrome-steel sculptures, highly detailed composite color photographs of objects including a ping-pong paddle, asparagus, a calculator, and a stress ball, all slightly enlarged from life, have been silkscreened onto the five mirrored planes (four sides and top) of each box. An introduction by artist Adam McEwen will accompany the work. |

From early 2009 to mid-2010, the Underbelly Project was the world’s best-kept urban art secret. This is the only book documenting the project, during which the world’s leading urban artists, such as Swoon, Faile, Revok, and Lister, made late-night trips to an abandoned New York City subway station, painting night after night to transform the space into the largest underground art gallery in the world. When curators Workhorse and PAC declared the project finished, there was no opening to show the work. In fact, the space’s location remains a secret kept by the MTA, which boarded up the space, making it, like the cave of Lascaux, a time capsule for future generations to discover.
