Andrey Tarkovsky is considered by many to be one of the greatest filmmakers the world has ever seen. Although he made just eight feature films before his life was cut tragically short by cancer, at the age of 54, each is an artistic masterpiece and a major landmark in world cinema. This book presents a portfolio of polaroids produced in association with the Florencebased Tarkovsky Foundation archive, which is maintained by the filmmakers son Andrey Tarkovsky. Taken in Russia and Italy between 1979 and 1984, ranging from romantic landscapes and studied portraits to private shots of the auteurs family and friends including late distinguished scripwriter Tonino Guerra all the photographs demonstrate the singular compositional and visual-poetic ability of this master image-maker. Many of the polaroids that were created in Russia complement and extend the personal imagery of the film Mirror (1974). Equally rewarding cross-fertilization is apparent in the images that were taken in Italy while he was travelling with Tonino Guerra and preparing Nostalgia (1983). Indeed, from when Michelangelo Antonioni first gave Tarkovsky a Polaroid camera in the 1970s, it rarely left his side. This book pairs Tarkovskys polaroids and projected scenes from his movies with photo collages and other works by Sergei Parajanov on loan from Parajanov Museum in Yerevan, Armenia, founded in 1988 when Parajanov moved there from Tbilisi, Georgia. Sergei Parajanov is one of the most daring and visionary directors to emerge from the former Soviet Union. Legends such as Fellini, Antonioni and Tarkovsky crowned Parajanov with titles like genius, magician and a master. |

The famous Russian collector and literary scholar Nikolai Khardzhiev (1903-1996) was a close friend and admirer of the modern painters, poets and philosophers of his time. Often buying directly from the artists and their families, from the late 1920s Khardzhiev collected work by such masters of the Russian avant-garde as Kazimir Malevich, Mikhail Larionov, Olga Rozanova, El Lissitzky, Vasily Chekrygin, Mikhail Matyushin and Vladimir Tatlin, thus compiling one of the greatest collections of this period. As the Soviet regime began to clamp down on Futurism and Suprematism, Khardzhiev sought to acquire anything that would allow him to one day write a history of these movements, and his archives also included manuscripts and rare books, as well as his own correspondence with artists. Russian Avant-Garde provides a full overview of the unique Khardziev-Chaga collection, which has been housed at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam since 1997. The collection contains numerous works on paper, including gouaches, watercolors, Futurist book cover designs, sketches, studies and archival photographs. These items, many of which have never previously been reproduced, greatly deepen our understanding of the sheer range and prolificness of these monumental artists, and Khardzhiev's valiant determination to preserve their work. |

«Born in 1969 and based in Moscow, Russia. The photographer Vladimir Mishukov obtained his BA at the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts in 1995. His first exhibition People for people was held in 2000 at the Butyrskaya prison in Moscow. Between 2000 and 2004, Mishukov was awarded the Silver Camera Grand Prix (Russia) in categories «Events and Everyday Life», «Architecture» and «Faces», and in 2004 he was granted a scholarship by the city of Paris. Since then, his work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Lausanne (2010), Aix-en-Provence (2011), and Moscow (2012).
