Art & Place is an extraordinary collection of outstanding art destinations in the Americas, visited by millions of people every year. The book features hundreds of powerful and spectacular art works, all created by an artist specifically for their location — whether indoors, outdoors, desert, in the mountains or in the middle of a city. This is art to experience — in an immersive way — presented together in a single book for the first time. From the monumental sculptures of Richard Serra to the grand land art of Robert Smithson, and from the to the oversized public installations of Claus Oldenberg to Diego Rivera's History of Mexico in Mexico City, Art & Place is the only book to compile all the best of site specific art of North, Central and South America. Featuring beloved site-specific art in 60 cities — from Albuquerque to Washington, DC and from Baja to Rio de Janeiro — Art & Place features maps pinpointing the location of sites and specially commissioned plans show the layout of complex sites. Each of the works has a dedicated entry that includes large-format images with an explanation of how the artist adapted their work to its environment. Art & Place presents works geographically rather than chronologically, allowing fresh juxtapositions and exciting opportunities for comparison to arise, as a spread of rock art may appear next to a contemporary sculpture. Covering everything from carving and painting, murals and frescos, mosaics, altarpieces, tapestries, integral sculpture, stained glass, earthworks and land art, there is something for everyone in this one-of-a-kind book. |

There is widespread agreement that art is 'very important' — but it can be remarkably hard to say quite why. Yet if art is to enjoy its privileges, it has to be able to demonstrate its relevance in understandable ways to the widest possible audience. Alain de Botton and John Armstrong have a firm belief that art can help us with our most intimate and ordinary dilemmas, asking: What can I do about the difficulties in my relationships? Why is my work not more satisfying? Why do other people seem to have a more glamorous life? Why is politics so depressing? The purpose of this book is to introduce a new method of interpreting art: art as a form of therapy. It's the authors' contention that certain art works provide powerful solutions to our problems, but that in order for this potential to be released, the audience's attention has to be directed towards it in a new way (which they demonstrate), rather than towards the more normal historical or stylistic concerns with which art books and museum captions are traditionally associated. The authors propose that the squeamish belief that art should be 'for art's sake' has unnecessarily held back art from revealing its latent therapeutic potential. This book involves reframing and recontextualising a series of art works from across the ages and genres, so that they can be approached as tools for the resolution of difficult issues in individual life. |

In this first ever English-language edition of Oscar Niemeyer's memoirs, the architect reveals how his many passions — among them his large family, many friends, the sensuous landscape of Brazil, women, Communism, art and literature — have all influenced his life and in turn inspired his architecture.Born in Rio de Janeiro, Niemeyer graduated from the National School of Fine Arts in 1934. As a student he worked in the office of Lucio Costa, and on graduation he began collaborating with Le Corbusier on a new Ministry of Education and Health Building in Rio. Yet, in contrast to the International Style, Niemeyer's curvilinear forms reflected Brazil's lush, undulating landscape and the emotive style of its music and dance. Here Niemeyer recounts his life in an informal, fluid narrative that moves from his childhood in Rio, through to friendships with intellectuals and politicians such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Fidel Castro, to tales of adventurous road trips. The book includes 40 specially-made sketches by Niemeyer, a chronology of his notes and an index. |

The Beatles follows the extraordinary development of four self-taught musicians from Liverpool, from their beginnings, until the break-up in 1970. This biography sets the group's evolution against the backdrop of a popular culture explosion in the 1960s. A serious study of the Beatles' music is expanded here by consideration not only of the group's commercially released disks but also of rare working tapes which both shed light on the compositional process and reveal how many of their milestone recordings took shape in the studio. It also examines why the innovative music of the Beatles — created, at least initially, as ephemera — has remained so durable. |

As the creator of Jackie Kennedy's signature pillbox hat and the designer of choice for Liza Minelli in the 1970s, Halston (1932-90) was synonymous with American style: a modern, minimal yet glamorous look that encompassed everything from flowing caftans to ultrasuede dresses, to uniforms that lent panache to airline attendants and the girl scouts of America alike. Beginning his career in Chicago in the late 1950s, by 1972 Halston had been named 'the premier fashion designer of all America' by Newsweek and was firmly established in New York; he counted such personalities as Andy Warhol and Bianca Jagger among his friends and clients. Tall, charismatic, impeccably dressed, Halston personified the lofty ambitions and non-stop nightlife of the 1970s and early 80s. This book, a visual anthology of Halston's life and legacy, includes previously unpublished catwalk photographs, rare archival photographs by Warhol, behind-the-scenes images of fashion shows and parties, one-off sketches and specially commissioned photographs of the collections. Halston embodies a magnificent tour de force of a life and career that are as monumental historically as they are fascinating, even to the less familiar reader. |
