For more than half a century people have marveled at the sweeping forms of the Trans World Airlines terminal at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York, lined up to enter the St. Louis Gateway Arch, and admired the mid-century modern lines of Knoll's Womb and Tulip chairs. Yet few outside the architecture profession can name the designer of these wide-ranging projects: the Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen (1910-1961). Saarinen made the cover of TIME magazine in 1956, heralded as a key practitioner of postwar modernism. He counted among his clients several of the world's most powerful corporations and educational institutions (among them General Motors, IBM, Yale University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology), and pioneered the development of new materials and building technologies. Yet in the decades following his death, interest in his work waned and much of his archive became difficult to access This highly anticipated monograph is the first major publication on Eero Saarinen since the early 1960s and fills a significant gap in Saarinen scholarship. Written in an accessible, journalistic style, it will be of interest to architects and students as well as general readers interested in the significant figures of twentieth-century modernism. |

The companion of Phaidon's popular The Endless City, Living in the Endless City will add the cities of Mumbai, Sao Paulo and Istanbul to the six cities of the first volume with the same mix of compelling photographs, in-depth and beautifully presented data, and smart writing by global thinkers. Each city is explored in a series of essays that address vital themes, from security to climate change, looking closely at the problems that face contemporary cities and examining a variety of solutions. Like the first book, the new one includes the best writing and information from the Urban Age project, a series of conferences held by the London School of Economics that explore vital field of urban development. Drawing on the work of scholars from all over the globe, this book will give the reader access to a wealth of ideas and data about Mumbai, Sao Paulo, Istanbul and, by extension, urban life across the globe. In addition to this close focus on each of the three cities, Living in the Endless City will feature analysis of surveys done in each city. Editors Deyan Sudjic of the Design Museum and Ricky Burdett of the LSE have also chosen the best contributors to both this book and The Endless City to write thematic essays that discuss the ideas and the lessons they have drawn across all nine cities. |

Contemporary sculpture is a wide-ranging and fascinating subject, surprisingly unrepresented in the current marketplace; this richly illustrated book, which follows the format of Phaidon Press' successful Art Today and Architecture Today, seeks to change this. In the great sea-change marking the end of Modernism — a general set of views and assumptions about art which reigned during the first half of the 20th century — critical opinion began to shift from painting to sculpture. Sculpture was felt to be more socially engaging because it occupied the actual space of the body rather than creating an illusionistic realm using perspective and other techniques. In the past twenty-five years sculpture has become a capacious and enormously inventive category that includes an astonishing range of phenomena. These encompass installations, environments, staged video displays and even choreographed humans. This sheer array of materials, forms and techniques that has been — and is still being — presented under the term of 'sculpture' in the 21st century indicates that the discipline is not an immutable art form with fixed boundaries and commandments, but rather that it can expand its terms of reference with unflagging energy, and is apparently inexhaustible. Sculpture Today is written in a scholarly yet accessible style, and offers a comprehensive and accessible overview of its subject, celebrating both the vitality and sheer diversity of sculpture during the last two and a half decades. |

The dishes are explained through a series of personal essays and narrative recipes, offering insight into Patterson's life, family, and inspirations. Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was initially trained to engrave and cut woodblock prints, but at the age of 18 also learned to design actor prints from the ukiyo-e master Katsukawa Shunsho (1726-92). Hokusai had an enormous output of about 30,000 original prints, paintings, sketches and book illustrations on a variety of subjects. Perhaps best-known for his beautiful landscapes, Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, produced at the age of 75, proved to be a major influence on European art and are today recognized throughout the world. A follow up to the best-selling publication Hokusai by Gian Carlo Calza, this fine selection of cards includes masterpieces from throughout Hokusai's long career. The prints featured here reflect the great themes of Hokusai's age — theatre, nature, landscape and feminine beauty. These wonderfully varied images illustrate all aspects of Hokusai's home, the ancient city of Edo (now Tokyo), from pictures promoting kabuki actors and beautiful courtesans to dreamy views of ancient bridges. This elegantly packaged collection will make an original and delightful gift at any time of year. |

These bold new postcards capture the stunning beauty of the unspoiled areas of our planet. The fifty cards feature a selection of pictures taken from Bernhard Edmaier's bestselling book Earthsong. The images chosen reflect the four major environments that cover the earth's surface — Aqua (water), Arid (desert), Green (forest and grassland) and Barren (tundra). In these cards Edmaier presents us with the frozen ice of the arctic next to barren deserts; the lush green forests and rivers of Europe beside South American volcanic lakes and the sapphire seas of the Bahamas against the salt lakes of California. Edmaier's photographs show locations around the world and demonstrate that there are still corners of the earth untouched by human influence, where nature rules and natural phenomena such as volcanoes, glaciers, desert sand dunes and rivers dominate and define the landscape. Photographed from the air, vast natural patterns of the earth are revealed to us in their unique beauty, showing phenomena that may last for only a few brief moments or remain for millions of years to come. |
