Mary Ellen Mark has worked on over a hundred film sets since 1968, including such legendary productions as Apocalypse Now, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Gandhi, as well as recent Oscar-winning productions such as Moulin Rouge, Babel and Sweeney Todd, among many others. Mark's film photographs are a rare archive as she is afforded unprecedented access to the actors and the set permitted for weeks at a time to roam freely. Mark is one of the most talented photojournalists working today and her unique ability to capture gesture and expression enables her to fully reveal the story of life on set. In photographs that range from dramatic moments of Federico Fellini at work on Satyricon, to the well-known pranksters Jack Nicholson and Dustin Hoffman fooling around on set, from Cate Blanchett and Brad Pitt rehearsing on set in Morocco for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Babel, to Johnny Depp in make-up for Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd, we are given access to unguarded moments in film-making and to this rarely-seen world. Some of the film industry's best-known figures have also contributed their own anecdotes of life on set including tales of growing up on set by Sofia Coppola, of the disconcerting experience of night shoots by Helen Mirren, and the work that goes into 'getting that take' from Catch 22 director Mike Nichols. This is a backstage pass to the most famous film sets in history through the lens of an iconic photographer, sure to appeal to film and photography enthusiasts, or to anyone who ever wondered just what happens behind the scenes.

Why do we dress the way we do? Why has fashion changed and evolved over the centuries? How did the 3-piece suit come about? Why have hemlines risen and fallen over time? In The Anatomy of Fashion, respected fashion commentator Colin McDowell goes beyond standard fashion histories and narrative surveys to answer these questions and many more. Uniquely structured, taking the reader through fashion and dress from head to toe — the whole body is anatomized into sections including 'The Body Unclothed' (Skin and Body Adornment, Materials and Texture, and Colour and Pattern), 'The Body Anatomized' ('Head to Waist'and 'Hips to Feet'), and 'The Body Clothed' (Looks and Themes in Dress). Visually rich, with over 500 photographs, illustrations, paintings and film stills, the book includes work by designers and labels such as Ralph Lauren, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Versace, Carhartt, Diesel and more. The book's dynamic structure and layout are equally suited for browsing and for serious reference, but The Anatomy of Fashion is not simply a picture book. It is a sourcebook by one of the world's leading fashion scholars that seeks nothing less than a thorough analysis of the roots of every aspect of fashion today.

Art as Therapy
Автор: Alain de Botton
Издательство: Phaidon Press, 2013
Жанр: Phaidon Press
Страниц: 240 страниц
Загрузил: admin, 23 декабря 2016
There is widespread agreement that art is 'very important' — but it can be remarkably hard to say quite why. Yet if art is to enjoy its privileges, it has to be able to demonstrate its relevance in understandable ways to the widest possible audience. Alain de Botton and John Armstrong have a firm belief that art can help us with our most intimate and ordinary dilemmas, asking: What can I do about the difficulties in my relationships? Why is my work not more satisfying? Why do other people seem to have a more glamorous life? Why is politics so depressing? The purpose of this book is to introduce a new method of interpreting art: art as a form of therapy. It's the authors' contention that certain art works provide powerful solutions to our problems, but that in order for this potential to be released, the audience's attention has to be directed towards it in a new way (which they demonstrate), rather than towards the more normal historical or stylistic concerns with which art books and museum captions are traditionally associated. The authors propose that the squeamish belief that art should be 'for art's sake' has unnecessarily held back art from revealing its latent therapeutic potential. This book involves reframing and recontextualising a series of art works from across the ages and genres, so that they can be approached as tools for the resolution of difficult issues in individual life.

The Curves of Time: The Memoirs of Oscar Niemeyer

In this first ever English-language edition of Oscar Niemeyer's memoirs, the architect reveals how his many passions — among them his large family, many friends, the sensuous landscape of Brazil, women, Communism, art and literature — have all influenced his life and in turn inspired his architecture.Born in Rio de Janeiro, Niemeyer graduated from the National School of Fine Arts in 1934. As a student he worked in the office of Lucio Costa, and on graduation he began collaborating with Le Corbusier on a new Ministry of Education and Health Building in Rio. Yet, in contrast to the International Style, Niemeyer's curvilinear forms reflected Brazil's lush, undulating landscape and the emotive style of its music and dance. Here Niemeyer recounts his life in an informal, fluid narrative that moves from his childhood in Rio, through to friendships with intellectuals and politicians such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Fidel Castro, to tales of adventurous road trips. The book includes 40 specially-made sketches by Niemeyer, a chronology of his notes and an index.

The Beatles follows the extraordinary development of four self-taught musicians from Liverpool, from their beginnings, until the break-up in 1970. This biography sets the group's evolution against the backdrop of a popular culture explosion in the 1960s. A serious study of the Beatles' music is expanded here by consideration not only of the group's commercially released disks but also of rare working tapes which both shed light on the compositional process and reveal how many of their milestone recordings took shape in the studio. It also examines why the innovative music of the Beatles — created, at least initially, as ephemera — has remained so durable.
