Impressed into service aboard the seal-hunting Ghost, Humphrey Van Weyden becomes an unwilling participant in a tense shipboard drama. With a wary eye, he watches the vessel’s abusive captain, Wolf Larsen, an enigma who can abandon two sailors on the open water, then return to reading the moral philosophers. One of the best sea novels ever written, The Sea-Wolf tells of mutiny, shipwreck, and a desperate confrontation. Also in this volume, “The Law of Life”, “The One Thousand Dozen”, “All Gold Canyon”, and “Moon-Face” offer more riveting action and adventure. In these tales, London’s descriptions of the natives, the northern dogs, and even the tundra capture the essence of the exuberant life he experienced firsthand. |

Five stories that epitomize Jack London's mastery of the adventure story. The White Silence, In a Far Country, and An Odyssey of the North bring the harshness of the frozen North powerfully to life while The Seed of McCoy reflects London's experiences as a sailor in the South Seas. Also includes The Mexican. Publisher's Note. |

From White Fang to The Iron Heel, The Call of the Wild to The People of the Abyss, London's novels are intense and atmospheric, and deserve their standing and reputation as some of the most exciting adventure stories ever put to paper. Jack London was highly qualified to be one of the 20th century's greatest writers of adventure stories, for he was one of its greatest adventurers. He was, to name but a few of his many occupations, an oyster pirate, government patrolman, seal hunter, gold prospector, war correspondent, landowner and tramp. From his vast and varied life experiences he drew inspiration for over fifty books in a literary career spanning only seventeen years. His work is remarkable, vivid and exciting, much like the author himself. From The Call of the Wild and White Fang, which rank as two of the best dog stories ever written, to the sea-based The Sea-Wolf and the social critiques of The People of the Abyss and The Iron Heel, Jack London's variety of work, not to mention the sheer quality, place him at the forefront of 20th century classic fiction. |

HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved, essential classics. 'Fear urged him to go back, but growth drove him on...' Set in the frozen forests of the Yukon Territory, Canada, during the Klondike Gold Rush of the 1890s, 'White Fang' tells the story of a young wolf-dog's journey from the wild into human territory. As White Fang learns that civilisation is every bit as vicious and violent as nature — and that survival is only awarded to the fittest — we too see how instinct, sensation and emotion drive every one of us. Published in 1906 to wide and instant acclaim, this is a remarkable and moving look at the timeless relationship between man and dog. |

Spellbinding tales of action and adventure from a master of the genre: The Call of the Wild, drawn from the author's own experiences as a Klondike adventurer; The Sea-Wolf, a gripping account of a deranged, abusive sea captain; White Fang, a riveting tale of savage wilderness life; and Five Great Short Stories. |

The Sea-Wolf belongs in the honorific tradition of American sea fiction where the voyage motif became a means of exploring the meaning of life, as in Richard Henry Dana's Two Years Before the Mast (1840), Edgar Allan Poe's The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym (1838), and Herman Melville's Moby Dick (1851). The dominant subject is an intellectual conflict between a ship-wrecked literary figure, Humphrey Van Weyden, and the brutal captain of a seal-hunting schooner, Wolf Larsen, who rescues Van Weyden and puts him to menial work on the schooner. The central chapters focus on the gory details of seal-hunting, and the final section shows how far Van Weyden has learned seamanship as he restores The Ghost to sailing health and returns to port with the only woman passenger, another shipwrecked figure, to plight their troth. |
