Founded in 1228, the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi is the burial place of the well-known saint and the mother church of the Franciscan order of monks. It is also a treasure house of art, decorated with monumental frescoes by some of the greatest painters of the 13th and 14th centuries. The Upper Church is perhaps most famed for its sequence of frescoes that celebrate the life and teachings of St Francis, attributed to Giotto and his workshop, while Cimabue and his followers were responsible for a series of dramatic scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The Lower Church, meanwhile, has been expanded through the addition of several magnificent chapels; their titular saints are commemorated with great imagination and immediacy in works by artists including Simone Martini and Pietro Lorenzetti. This book takes its readers on a guided tour of this magnificent complex, aided by a wealth of beautiful photographs. |

Russia and the Arts: The Age of Tolstoy and Tchaikovsky explores the history of Russian portraiture between 1867 and 1914, a time of great cultural vibrancy in the country and a golden age of the Russian portrait. While Tolstoy and Dostoevsky were publishing masterpieces such as Anna Karenina and The Brothers Karamazov and Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov were taking Russian music to new heights, Russian art was developing a new self-confidence. The penetrating Realism of the 1870s and 1880s was later complemented by the brighter hues of Russian Impressionism and the bold forms of Symbolist painting; these styles were applied to portraits of prominent thinkers, writers, scientists, artists, actors, composers and musicians by the most outstanding painters of the day. This volume traces the period’s developments in Russian art through the collection of the Moscow State Tretyakov Gallery, founded in 1856, itself a product of this same moment of cultural flourishing. Portraiture was a major part of the collection’s mission from the late 1860s, when founder Pavel Tretyakov began to commission and acquire portraits guided by two principal values: the historical role of the sitter and the artistic value of the portrait. Beautifully illustrated with key works from the State Tretyakov Gallery, Russia and the Arts highlights some of the extraordinary developments that took place in the arts in Russia in the years before World War I. |

This is the most complete and beautiful study of the Chapel of the Rosary in Vence, near Nice in the South of France, considered one of the most important religious structures of the modern age and regarded by Henri Matisse himself as his great masterpiece. Matisse dedicated four years to the creation of this chapel, and the result is one of the most remarkable ensemble pieces of 20th-century art. Every element of the chapel bears the artist’s touch, from the vivid Mediterranean hues of the stained-glass windows to the starkly powerful murals; even the vestments and altar were designed by Matisse. Using superb new photography that demonstrates the dramatic effect of changing light throughout the day, this book is the first to present the experience of being in this sacred space exactly as Matisse envisaged it. Marie- Thérèse Pulvenis de Seligny’s authoritative text explores the extraordinary story of the chapel’s creation and the challenges faced by the 77-year-old artist in realizing his great vision. |

The 1910s and 1920s witnessed an outpouring of luxury fashion publications that used a hand-stenciling technique known as pochoir (French for stencil). This highly refined, painterly technique, which consists of applying layers of gouache paint or watercolor to achieve bold blocks of saturated color, produced works of visual artistry previously unrivaled in the history of fashion illustration. Fashion and the Art of Pochoir presents a carefully curated selection of 300 of the most exceptional illustrations from albums produced by the leading French couturiers, as well as from high-end fashion magazines. Artists from Paul Iribe, Georges Lepape, and George Barbier to Umberto Brunelleschi, Eduardo Garcia Benito, and André E. Marty, these artists inaugurated the alliance between fashion and art with highly stylized depictions of the work of cutting edge designers such as Paul Poiret, Jeanne Lanvin, and Madeleine Vionnet, among others. Complete with biographical descriptions of the featured illustrators and fashion designers, Fashion and the Art of Pochoir celebrates the rare?and rarely seen?images that defined a short but magnificent golden age of fashion illustration. |

When fashion photographer and costume designer Cecil Beaton died in 1980, it was not surprising that one of his tailors was telephoned with the news before Buckingham Palace, despite his close association with the Royal Family. From the moment he arrived at Cambridge University in 1922 wearing an evening jacket, red shoes, black-and-white trousers, and a large cravat, to his appearance nearly forty years later at Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball, Beaton expressed a flamboyant sartorial nonchalance. He had accounts with the best Savile Row tailors; he bought his shirts from Excello in New York; and his clothes from Lanz of Salzburg now reside, along with other elements of his wardrobe, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. A Life in Fashion is a lively and informative study of Beaton’s style, which kept evolving over the decades, driving and reflecting the transitions in men’s fashion that followed the Second World War. Drawing on unpublished records and interviews with Beaton’s former tailors, Benjamin Wild delightfully scrutinizes Beaton’s approach to fashion as well as his influence on designers such as Giles Deacon and Dries van Noten. 80 illustrations in color and black-and-white |

When Marc Chagall, Kasimir Malevich, and the other artists of the Russian Avant-Garde created art in opposition to the sanctioned style of Socialist Realism, they set off an artistic revolution that represents a fascinating chapter in the history of twentieth-century art. Reaching its creative zenith between 1905 and 1934, the movement is best known for combining Cubism with the forward-looking vision of the Italian Futurists, but the movement was also much more diverse than is generally realized. This book presents for the first time a comprehensive look at the scope of the Russian Avant-Garde movement through a sequence of 130 major and minor works by Chagall and Malevich, as well as Nathan Altman, Alexandra Ekster, Natalia Goncharova, Wassily Kandinsky, Mikhail Larionov, El Lissitzky, Kusma Petrow-Wodkin, Liubov Popova, Alexander Rodchenko, and many others. Together, these works show how widely different styles and design principles developed in parallel. While some turned to expressionism and pure abstraction, others drew inspiration from the successive movements of primitivism, Cubo-futurism, and suprematism. Artists within the movement frequently drew inspiration from one another, but their aesthetic views were also at times in conflict. With a wealth of full-color illustrations, Chagall to Malevich: The Russian Avant-Gardes offers a rich sense of this radically innovative tradition, presenting the diversity of the movement while reinforcing its broader aim of challenging conventions of art at the time. |
