This book presents six case-study buildings, each more than a generation old, that were on the brink of oblivion. In each case, Mitchell Giurgola Architects worked closely with the client to determine how the project could be salvaged by incorporating updated program elements to serve a new generation of users. All six case studies present in detail how each project is analysed, from its energy use and curtain-wall performance to its mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, and structural stability. The results are born-again buildings created for a fraction of the cost and cosuming far fewer materials than a new facility built from scratch. Mitchell Giurgola documents a new, more sustainable approach to design and construction that builds on the past, and makes the old better than new. |

The Modern Californian Beach House catalogues the eclectic and always original modernist beach house architecture of Patrick Killen, founder of studio 9 one 2. Killen helped introduce serious modern design to the Los Angeles beach communities in the mid-80s, which at the time was a crazy quilt of fantasy structures all built on postage-stamp sized lots. The projects featured in this collection span Killen's stellar career, from the Shearin House, which established modernism as a viable architectural motif on the western edge of Los Angeles, to 139 Hermosa Avenue, a definitive and welcome statement of modernity amid a sea of ramshackle and derelict LA beachside structures. Killen's beach houses have added another textural element to the architectural stewing pot that is beachside LA. He is committed to modernism, which he claims is the architecture of our time, and his architecture reflects a regionalism and humour that encapsulates the California lifestyle. |

Necessity is the mother of invention, and the global necessity of facing the challenges of Climate Change has unleashed the inventive powers of architects around the world, many of whom are tackling the problem in original and highly creative ways. And yet, as the projects contained in this volume attest, sustainable design doesn't necessarily preclude style and comfort, or even a little bit of luxury. With lush full-colour photography, detailed floor and site plans, and informative descriptions of each house's sustainable design elements, Sustainable Homes takes the reader on a round-the-world journey, traversing a range of climates, to see how today's architects are making the most of traditional and modern design principles and technologies to create more energy efficient houses. From the Light House in the UK, that country's first carbon-zero house, to the Palmyra House in India, a model in using local sustainable materials, to the sculptural works of art formed from the ecological-friendly technique of whole tree architecture, the houses in Sustainable Homes will captivate you with their beauty and invention, and inspire you with their ideas. |

Graft in architecture refers to any designs added to existing or neglected structures, reinvigorating tired spaces with new life. Instead of dismissing these spaces as simply functional, graft in architecture values them for their potential and shows how we can turn negative spaces into opportunities to breathe new life into architecture. Along with the Design Research & Innovation Laboratory (D-Lab), Professor Jin-Ho Park highlights four projects and the process involved in grafting, from conception to fabrication, along with plans, drawings, and photographs detailing every aspect and consideration. Using inventive ideas and experimental approaches, Professor Park demonstrates the benefits graft in architecture can bring to any space. |

Written by a world expert in the field, 'Innovative Homes' offers information on contemporary design concepts and illustrates them with examples of truly outstanding designs. Current modes of dwelling design are facing challenges of both philosophy and form. Approaches that have prevailed in past decades no longer sustain new demands and require innovative rethinking. The need for a new outlook is propelled by fundamental changes to the environment, economy, and society. Design for passive solar gain, solar-powered homes, minimising a dwelling's physical footprint, Net-Zero residences, and preserving a site's natural assets are some of the strategies that the architects and builders featured in this book are integrating into their thought processes and design practices. |

21st Century Architecture: Courtyards features courtyard gardens and terraces designed to become part of the interior spaces of the homes they adjoin. Providing an attractive solution for time-poor owners, these low-maintenance gardens function as outdoor rooms and become extensions of everyday living spaces. Many of the outdoor spaces featured are architect-designed, while others are the work of landscape designers. A spectacular garden by landscape architect Jane Irwin is featured, together with designs from the award-winning landscape designer Jack Merlo. While each designer's approach to the outdoors is unique, all demonstrate a mindfulness of the need to bring the outdoors inside — to extend the sense of space on both sides of the floor-to-ceiling glass walls and doors. |
