101 Essential Rock'n' Roll Albums
Издательство: Gingko Press, 2012
Жанр: Gingko Press
Страниц: 240 страниц
Загрузил: admin, 23 декабря 2015
This volume celebrates 101 seminal rock 'n' roll records, from the Beatles 1963 debut through the Sex Pistols' 1977 classic Never Mind The Bollocks. The blue-chip artists are there, but this thoughtful book is also peppered with lesser-known nuggets and underexposed musicians. The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Pink Floyd rub elbows with Laura Nyro's More Than a New Discovery and Pentangle's Sweet Child. An essay on each title accompanies reproductions of the original vinyl album cover artwork, with many rare variations from around the world. Also included are intimate interviews with rock 'n' roll royalty, with artists revealing the albums and performers that influenced them, and how. David Bowie enthuses about the Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop recalls having hamburgers in Berlin with Frank Zappa and David Bowie, and Graham Nash recalls Paul McCartney and John Lennon singing a just-written Misery to him backstage, one voice in each ear. Also included are contributions from Suzanne Vega, the Smiths' Johnny Marr, Devendra Banhart, Robyn Hitchcock, Wilco's Nels Cline, and more.

International icon of black ink, artist Michael (GIANT) LeSage incorporates a broad swathe of influences and skills in the creation of a singular, unmistakable aesthetic. Mikes central practice, drawing, is informed by his training in architectural drafting, his illustrious career as a tattooist and worldwide exploits writing on walls. In his latest and most complete monograph, the reader will enjoy photos of perfectly executed tattoos, page after page of Mikes inscrutable tattoo flash, hand lettering nonpareil, and tons of drawings, graffiti pieces and action shots. GIANTs worldwide travels — inking people, places and finer drawing paper around the world from Amsterdam to London, Thailand, Toronto, New York and back home to San Francisco are also given due prominence. Buddhism, track bikes, designing for apparel brand Rebel8, and painting fill Lesages hours, but at the end of the day, it all comes full circle, back to his unwaveringly mindful solid black lines.

Mayday: The Art of Shepard Fairey
Автор: Fairey Shepard
Издательство: Gingko Press, 2011
Жанр: Gingko Press
Страниц: 144 страницы

The final exhibition before the closing of New York's seminal Deitch Projects, May Day is simultaneously a call for heightened awareness and a celebration of the rebirth embodied in revolutionary movements. May Day presents an evocative collection of paintings from one of the most important artists of our time. Portraits of advocates of the working class and oppressed define the collection. Fairey stakes the claim that artists, musicians and writers such as Joe Strummer, Jean Michel Basquiat and Cornel West all have parts to play in stimulating response to injustice. With energy and urgency befitting the title May Day, Fairey captures the radical spirit of his subjects. Says Fairey, These people I'm portraying were all revolutionary, in one sense or another. They started out on the margins of culture and ended up changing the mainstream. When we celebrate big steps that were made in the past, it reminds us that big steps can be made in the future.

This book is all about an art form that aims to be unsettling and has its roots in the 20th Century. Some people make a connection between dark art and gothic subculture, others simply associate it with the metaphysical, the disturbing or the nightmarish. However you perceive it, this art form is now part of mainstream culture and is becoming ever more popular. It can be found in all sorts of media including advertising, television, and film. This collection of works compiled by Juxtapoz features todays most talented dark artists, all of whom create a certain mood or emotion in their work that is uniquely theirs. Some are especially lush in detail and color such as those by Wendy Cogan-Toyoda; others more minimalist such as Irana Douers hidden treasure nudes. Artists featured include Cleon Peterson, Richard Colman, Seonna Hong, Marci Washington, Caroline Hwang, Alex Pardee, Suzanne Sattler and more.

This carefully curated new book in the ongoing Juxtapoz series collects handicrafts that transcend the cliches of the contemporary movement. These objects are indeed works of art, created with lashings of passion, whimsy and humor. The subject matter varies from foodstuff to robots and materials run the gamut from cardboard and paper to cloth, porcelain, metal, wool and yarn. All have been molded, etched, knitted or stitched into surprising shapes and forms from a knitted TV Dinner to a miniature streetscape. These are works that have crossed the boundary between craft, design and contemporary art, many worthy of exhibition in galleries and museums. From the vivid colors and definitive lines of Nicole Gastonguay's knitted sardine can to the candid realism of Sara Escamilla's cast footwear and clothing, each is in a class of its own. Other artists featured include Megan Whitworth, Stephanie Munroe, Christl Hansman, Diem Chau and Ana Serrano.

Juxtapoz Art and Culture magazine was established by California artist Robert Williams in 1994 to document an exploding art movement emanating largely from the West Coast. In the intervening years, this movement has gone global and Juxtapoz has rebranded and reimagined itself to better represent a generation of artists intent on working outside the art establishment. In this first volume Illustration, artists such as Mode 2, KozynDan, Mike Giant, James Jean, Evan Hecox, Grotesk, Alex Pardee and Morning Breath are briefly profiled then allowed the space to let their work do the talking. While all of the artists in this volume have experienced professional success and artistic accolades, they remain accessible to the commercial client and art collector alike, representing this phenomenal modern movement perfectly.

Страниц: 128 страниц

Banksy in New York offers a first-hand account of his residency: the defacement and removal of his pieces, reactions from neighbors and building owners and interactions between Banksy's fans and foes. The author draws on his extensive knowledge of street art and graffiti in New York to assess the impact of Banksy's work from a cultural and art-historical perspective. Mock is as much a fan as a critic of the artist's work and delivers his account in the form of a personal narrative that is by turns insightful and humorous, paying homage to Banksy's wit and creativity while challenging the artist and his detractors to consider the true impact of his work. The hardcover edition of Banksy in New York features over 140 photos and illustrations on 128 pages as well as a new foreword by Brooklyn Street Art founders Jaime Rojo and Steven P. Harrington.
