Combining Japanese skill in the management of space with the art of garden design has produced a very particular kind of miniature garden. A part of the Japanese architectural canon for at least a thousand years, it is called tsubo-niwa after a unit of measurement that is two person-sized tatami mats placed side by side. It can be as small as 40 square feet, and can be interior, exterior, or occupy that peculiarly Japanese intermediate, transitional space between the two. Recently, the pocket garden has taken on a new life. Swept up in the design overhaul that has taken place in Japan in the last decade and a half, a new generation of architects and designers is experimenting with the concept in imaginative ways, using a broad array of materials-from andesite and plastic to cast glass and bronze-to create contemplative, reflective, and inspiring designs. Whether as an urban solution to importing nature into the home or as an individual theme set within a larger garden space, the modern pocket garden follows a distinct yet global aesthetic. |

Inspirational Ideas for the Home. Drawing on a wide range of modern design from many countries, this unique, rich sourcebook takes an elemental approach to the design of a home. In an age when no interior design principle goes unchallenged and all ideas are possible, the only sensible approach is to start from the basic elements — how a home works and what we expect from it. This book is illustrated with hundreds of colour photographs by Michael Freeman, one of the most widely travelled authors and photographers working in this area. |

China is booming not only in the shape of a rapidly growing economy, but also in the decorative and fine arts, in interior design and in architecture. This book showcases 36 of the most exciting interiors that have been born of this second cultural revolution. Some of the structures have taken the traditional Chinese vernacular and reinvigorated it, while others show a distinctly western influence. But whatever the emphasis of their design principles, all the buildings and interiors have a distinctive air of visual excitement and vibrancy, and all are utterly contemporary. |
