«This title features collected works of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Few American novelists of the twentieth century have stayed as modern as F. Scott Fitzgerald. He gave a name to his age, 'the Jazz Age', but his reputation has outlived it. Gathered here are the five novels he wrote in his relatively short career, together with a number of the many short stories he wrote between 1922 and his death in 1940. «This Side of Paradise» catapulted him to fame, its expose of the manners and morals of a post-war generation becoming a cause celebre. «The Beautiful and Damned», a semi-autobiographical moral parable of a doomed marriage, affirmed Fitzgerald's status as the spokesman for the generation of the 1920s. His third novel, «The Great Gatsby», remains for many readers the definitive American novel of the twentieth century, its eponymous hero a complex fictional portrayal of a romantic imagination at the mercy of a corrupt reality. «Tender is the Night» is an American Vanity Fair set on the French Riviera in the 1920s. Fitzgerald was working on «The Last Tycoon» at his death in 1940, and many critics rank his account of Hollywood at the height of the studio system, even in its unfinished state, as comparable to the achievement of «The Great Gatsby».»

«This title includes an Introduction and Notes by Henry Claridge, Senior Lecturer, School of English, University of Kent at Canterbury. «Tender is the Night» is a story set in the hedonistic high society of Europe during the 'Roaring Twenties'. A wealthy schizophrenic, Nicole Warren, falls in love with Dick Diver — her psychiatrist. The resulting saga of the Divers' troubled marriage, and their circle of friends, includes a cast of aristocratic and beautiful people, unhappy love affairs, a duel, incest, and the problems inherent in the possession of great wealth. Despite cataloguing a maelstrom of interpersonal conflict, «Tender is the Night» has a poignancy and warmth that springs from the quality of Fitzgerald's writing and the tragic personal experiences on which the novel is based. Six years separate «Tender is the Night» and «The Last Tycoon», the novel Fitzgerald left unfinished at his death in December 1940. Fitzgerald lived in Hollywood more or less continuously from July 1937 until his death, and a novel about the film industry at the height of 'the studio system' centred on the working life of a top producer was begun in 1939. Even in its incomplete state «The Last Tycoon» remains the greatest American novel about Hollywood and contains some of Fitzgerald's most brilliant writing.»

«Set in the South of France in the decade after World War I, «Tender is the Night» is the story of a brilliant and magnetic psychiatrist named Dick Diver; the bewitching, wealthy, and dangerously unstable mental patient, Nicole, who becomes his wife; and the beautiful, harrowing ten-year pas de deux they act out along the border between sanity and madness. In «Tender is the Night», Fitzgerald deliberately set out to write the most ambitious and far-reaching novel of his career, experimenting radically with narrative conventions of chronology and point of view and drawing on early breakthroughs in psychiatry to enrich his account of the makeup and breakdown of character and culture.»

«The Beautiful and Damned», F. Scott Fitzgerald's second novel, tells the story of Anthony Patch, a 1920s socialite and presumptive heir to a tycoon's fortune, the relationship with his wife Gloria, his service in the army, and alcoholism. The novel provides an excellent portrait of the Eastern elite as the Jazz Age begins its ascent, engulfing all classes into what will soon be known as Cafe Society. As with all of his other novels, it is a brilliant character study and is also an early account of the complexities of marriage and intimacy, largely based on Fitzgerald's relationship and marriage with Zelda Fitzgerald.»

It is the French Riviera in the 1920s. Nicole and Dick Diver are a wealthy, elegant, magnetic couple. A coterie of admirers are drawn to them, none more so than the blooming young starlet Rosemary Hoyt. When Rosemary falls for Dick, the Diver's calculated perfection begins to crack. As dark truths emerge, Fitzgerald shows both the disintegration of a marriage and the failure of idealism. Tender is the Night is as sad as it is beautiful.

«First published in 1920, Flappers and Philosophers marked F. Scott Fitzgerald's entry into the realm of the short story, in which he adroitly proved himself «a master of the mechanism of short story technique (Boston Transcript). Several of his most beloved tales are represented in this collection of eight, including Bernice Bobs Her Hair and Head and Shoulders, with their particularly O. Henry-like twists; the poignant Benediction and The Cut-Glass Bowl; and The Offshore Pirate, the octet's opening and most romantic story. It is a collection of masterful short works from an American literary icon that led The New York Times Book Review to note that [no one] can fail to recognize Mr. Fitzgerald's talent and genius. Pocket Books' Enriched Classics present the great works of world literature enhanced for the contemporary reader. Special features include critical perspectives, suggestions for further reading, and a unique visual essay composed of period photographs that help bring every word to life.»

HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved, essential classics. 'They were smiling at each other as if this was the beginning of the world.' The lights of Hollywood do little to distract Cecelia as she watches Monroe Stahr, wunderkind studio executive and object of her desire, descend into a reckless and ardent love affair with an auspicious starlet — an affair that threatens to destroy his reign as the Silver Screen's golden boy. In this tragic tale Fitzgerald exposes the corruption, sex and towering ambition at the dark heart of 1930s Hollywood. Unfinished at the time of his death, F. Scott Fitzgerald bids his own poignant farewell to the themes that inspired 'The Great Gatsby', 'Tender is the Night' and 'The Beautiful and Damned'.

Fitzgerald's final completed novel, Tender is the Night was a true labour of love inspired by the author's own life. American psychiatrist Dick Diver and his wife Nicole are glamorous socialites, enjoying sparkling lives amidst a flurry of decadent associates in dazzling 1920s France. But Dick has a weakness, Nicole has a secret, and the entrance of a youthful actress catalyses the unravelling of relationships and tarnishes life under the Riviera sun. Inspired by the darkness in the author's own life and marriage, Tender is the Night is at once a vivid imagining of a unique era, and a delicately crafted and poignant study of the selfishness that simmers within us all.

This title is widely regarded as the Great American Novel. A big-screen adaptation, directed by Baz Lurhman and starring Leonardo Dicaprio will be released in May 2013. On the surface, mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby has everything, but he maintains a distance from those in his orbit, the guests at his constant decadent parties who indulge in all that sensuous 'Roaring Twenties' New York has to offer. Everything glitters, but beneath the glamour there is lost love, there is moral failure. Then, tragedy. The romance, style, brutality and introspection of The Great Gatsby make it not only the author's magnum opus, but one of the paramount American classics.

Gatsby's mansion on Long Island blazes with light, and the beautiful, the wealthy, and the famous drive out from New York to drink Gatsby's champagne and to party all night long. But Jay Gatsby, the owner of all this wealth, wants only one thing — to find again the woman of his dreams, the woman he has held in his heart and his memory for five long years. The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald's masterpiece, is one of the great American novels of the twentieth century. It captures perfectly the Jazz Age of the 1920s, and goes deep into the hollow heart of the American Dream.

Undisputed king of jazz-age writing, F. Scott Fitzgerald perfectly encapsulated all the glamour and despair of 1920s' society. These three short stories are supreme examples of his craft. With wealth and privileges beyond measure, 'rich boy' Anson Hunter had every reason to expect life to be a breeze. Yet one by one his dreams fade away, leaving him with nothing. Slowly, painfully he realises that beneath the sparkle and fizz of his glittering life lies only failure and disillusionment — the self-same emptiness that pervades the beautiful people of The Last of the Belles and The Bridal Party.
