Hotshot maritime lawyer Jonathan Brooks may finally be in over his head. He can't find evidence that his client's ship was rammed by a U.S. Navy vessel — evidence he needs to win his trial and help his client escape bankruptcy. But after Jonathan's courtroom tactics expose a Navy captain lying under oath, the case takes a series of shocking turns, dredging up haunting memories of Jonathan's deceased brother. He soon realizes that the trial masks a vastly more sinister plot veiled by the shadowy past of the Cold War. To uncover it, he's forced to risk everything — and everyone — he holds dear. Lives and corporate empires hang in the balance as he embarks on a hunt for the truth, which will lead him through the sultry alleys of New Orleans to remote Scandinavian villages, and deep into Moscow's dark corridors of power. |

Heads You Win is a tragicomedy of second chances. After taking early retirement, Gus Cotton is surprised to find himself persuaded by two old friends — a disgraced wheeler-dealer and a convicted drug smuggler — into taking on the City by launching the greatest headhunting company of all time. Added to this mix, the fourth partner in their venture is a beautiful young woman with a genius for IT and an alcoholic past. In this, the final volume of his Chronicle of Modern Twilight series, Ferdinand Mount has created a poignant and hilariously funny exploration of the concept that none of us is beyond redemption. |

During the first half of 1941 Moscow and its people were living in relative peace in a world of war. In spite of the horrors of Stalinism many ordinary people managed to find their own ways of enjoying themselves, and when war surprised a country unprepared, thanks to Stalin's obduracy, most rose with enthusiasm to defend their country and their city. One of the points of the book is to try and show how people find a kind of normality even in the hardest of circumstances. On the 22 June the Nazi armies invaded and raced across the country. By the end of the year they were held, finally, in the suburbs of Moscow. Based on huge research and scores of interviews, this book offers an unforgettable and richly illustrated narrative of the military action; telling portraits of Stalin and his generals, some apparatchiks, some great commanders. It also traces the stories of individuals, soldiers, politicians and intellectuals, writers and artists and dancers, workers, schoolchildren and peasants. The war remains a highly emotional matter for Russia and there are troubling questions like the role of Stalin or the appalling cost of victory. The book concludes with reflections on these issues. |

A book about identity, about journeys, about transitions and boundaries — most especially those between life and death — and about contemporary adventures that suddenly assume mythic proportions. Accept Clive Sinclair's invitation, and you will embark upon an expedition led by none other than Odysseus, still desperately seeking Penelope. You will cross paths with the Lone Ranger, with Wyatt Earp, the most famous lawman of them all, and his voluptuous wife — whose portrait on the front cover (which just so happens to be the double of a missing spouse) may or may not be a true likeness. |

With this volume, John Bayley completes his trilogy, looking back on the years in sickness and health which he and Iris spent together, and attempting to come to terms with her absence. As time goes by he finds himself beset with new and alarmingly unfamiliar problems: he suffers equally from the helplessness of being alone and the kindly harassment of well-wishers; discovering too that a widower's life can contain many moments of bizarre comedy. But too much solitude — or too much company — begin to make life seem unbearably complicated. Mella and Margot, ladies who singly and together have shown signs of wanting to take him over, make a determined reappearance. When these events move inexorably towards a crisis, he feels compelled to leave the house in Oxford where he and Iris lived for more than ten years. It is a decision made with reluctance, which promises nonetheless to give the period of bereavement an unexpectedly happy ending. |

«As the ruthless forces of Russia lay waste to the New World, English troops make landfall in the east, determined to reconquer the colonies. Trapped in between are the Native Americans, ex-slaves, and European refugees, led by Benjamin Franklin and the Choctaw shaman Red Shoes. But the balance of power rests with the French woman Adrienne de Montchevreuil, whose grasp of science is the equal of Franklin's, whose magic may be stronger than the Choctaw, and whose shocking secret may call into question where her true allegiances lie... Inventive and exciting, filled with clever details and high adventure, this brings to a close a sequence that seems likely to establish Keyes as one of the more significant and original new fantasy writers to appear in recent years — «Science Fiction Chronicle». Thrilling... The book builds to a climactic confrontation to see who will reshape the universe — «Publishers Weekly».» |

A brilliant literary thriller in the style of Scott Turow. Having resolved an explosive case in a controversial manner, Andrew Giobberti has been exiled from the high-powered DA's Homicide Bureau to the dusty decay of the Appeals Bureau. But the powers that be want this brilliant, difficult prosecutor back in the courtroom. They're counting on Giobberti's courtroom brilliance to ensure a guilty verdict for murder suspect Haskin Pool. It seems a straightforward enough case — a robbery gone bad, leaving a well-loved grocer in a pool of his own blood. The press has poured a lot of ink on the story, pressuring local police to get a killer behind bars. But Giobberti has a habit of uncovering nothing but the whole truth. It doesn't take long for him to realize this case stinks. There's a conspiracy to convict that reaches well up the political hierarchy and it's fully expected that Giobberti will play a key role in this seamy drama. |
