Inspired by the story of Christ's first miracle as recounted in the Gospel of St. John, Paolo Veronese's dazzling, monumental painting The Wedding at Cana was comissioned to be hung in the refectory of the Benedictine monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. Witches & Wicked Bodies provides an innovative, rich survey of images of European witchcraft covering from the sixteenth century to the present day. It focuses on the representation of female witches and the enduring stereotypes they embody, ranging from hideous old crones to beautiful young seductresses. Such imagery has ancient precedents and has been repeatedly re-invented by artists over the centuries, to include scenes with corpses and cauldrons, caverns and kitchens, and the dead being raised through demonic or satanic rites — all inversions of an ordered and religious social world. The artworks in this book show the history of the car from its creation up until the start of the 1970s. The posters have been chosen for their importance, rarity, beauty and innovation, as well as for what they represent in terms of significant historical, technical and artistic stages of the motor car. They showcase the work of the designers and illustrators who constantly strove to come up with new ideas and styles to match the technological progress of famous names such as Peugeot, Mercedes Daimler, Renault, Citroen, Bugatti, Buick, Fiat, Rolls Royce and Chrysler, as well as others that are less well-known nowadays. As the cars developed, so the daredevil drivers and entrepreneurs found increasingly daring exploits with which to show off their prowess and endurance. Emmanuel Lopez charts the history of car racing from early competitions such as the Paris-Rouen in 1894, which saw steam-driven carriages going head-to-head with petrol engines over a 126 km course, through the start of international races and on to the Grand Prix, the rise of circuits such as the Nurburgring and the legendary Le Mans 24-hour Race. Chelsea Physic Garden was founded by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries in 1673 as a resource providing plant material for the training of apothecaries. For most of its existence, the Garden has been a focus for botanists, taxonomists, students and horticulturists both for employing their skills and in training the next generation. These activities have been supported by the work of plant illustrators. It is the purpose of this book to display the work of talented late twentieth and early twenty-first century botanical artists, members of Chelsea Physic Garden Florilegium Society, whose explicit aim is to illustrate plants in cultivation in the Garden. In 1995 the Chelsea Physic Garden Florilegium Society was co-founded by Margaret King and Wendy Page. It is a group of artists, the first cohort of which had been studying for a Diploma in botanical illustration at the English Gardening School at Chelsea Physic Garden. Botanical Illustration from Chelsea Physic Garden includes selected works from the garden's archive, which now totals about 500 works. The seventy-eight illustrations reproduced include one in pen-and-ink and three in graphite (lead pencil), all examples of work by masters of their technique. Also included is one work in coloured pencil which is, even on close inspection, indistinguishable from the best water-colour painting. The plates are accompanied by notes about the uses of the plants, as well as the botanical name of the plant and its family. |

This book focuses on two aspects of Khmer ceramics — their beauty and their meaning — and looks at them through the extraordinary private collection of Yothin Tharahirunchot. This book aims to explore the meaning of Khmer ceramics within the context of their function and to call attention to their aesthetics. The largest and most complete in the world, the collection of Yothin Tharahirunchot, comprises some 160 pieces and reflects the owner's knowledgeable eye, keen sensibility, and enduring passion for Khmer ceramics. Yothin Tharahirunchot invited renowned ceramics expert Dawn F. Rooney to research and publish the collection. Furthermore, two Thai scholars, Krisda Pinsri and Pariwat Thammapreechakorn were engaged to research specific aspects of the subject. Their findings are presented for the first time in this book. Both papers are expansive and explore understudied areas of Khmer ceramics. To convey the beauty of the wares, Yothin Tharahirunchot invited Robert McLeod, an internationally renowned photographer, to photograph the collection. His evocative photographs encouraged a single-page format supported by descriptive captions. |

Annibale (1560-1609) and Agostino Carricci (1557-1602), together with their cousin, Ludovico (1555-1619), were famous in the 17th and 18th centuries as the saviours of art. Critical opinion held that the three painters had changed the course of art history with their insistence on the study of nature and their embracing of the values seen in the art of Raphael and Corregio. In the 35 years since the exhibition of drawings by the Carracci from British collections held at Newcastle in 1961, much scholarly work has been done on the Carracci, and on their drawings in particular. The majority of the literature is concerned with the nature of the Carracci academy and with the critical fortunes of the three artists. The book aims to provide a critical study of the drawings which should be of interest to scholars and the general public. Questions of attribution, and trends in critical debates are explored. The overall focus is on major issues: the complex question of collaboration, and the cross-fertilization of ideas between the three artists; the central importance of life drawings; the inventiveness of Annibale in particular; and the creative graphic explorations of all three Carracci in drawings and prints, and the wit and playfulness which runs through so many sheets. The book also includes an essay by Dr Catherine Whistler on the taste for Carracci drawings in Britain. |

David Bomberg, Dora Carrington, Mark Gertler, Paul Nash, C.R.W. Nevinson and Stanley Spencer — six of the most important and distinctive British artists of the twentieth century — had all been students together at the Slade School of Art in London. They formed part of what their drawing teacher, Henry Tonks, described as the school's last crisis of brilliance. For young British artists working in the years immediately before the Great War it was an exciting and demanding time as various Modernist movements fought for precedence: Primitivism, Futurism, Cubism, Vorticism and Expressionism. Each of the six artists found their own distinctive response. David Boyd Haycock's group biography, A Crisis of Brilliance, was published to much acclaim in 2009. Jenny Uglow wrote in her review in the Guardian, We should call for a joint exhibition of [their] work, to complement the moving portrayal of their lives in this engrossing and enjoyable book. This book marks the fulfillment of that wish. It features Haycock's selection of 70 works, ranging from their early student drawings, watercolours and oil paintings, to the first great mature works that they made during and immediately after the Great War of 1914-18. |
