The twentieth century offers the new collector a wide range of opportunities to build up a collection, from coffee sets, dinner wares, decorative plaques, egg cups and even chamber pots to a whole range of novelties that were manufactured by the pottery industry across Europe and America. The market for collectables has expanded greatly over the last twenty years with many people starting to buy their first examples from local flea markets, car boot sales and auction houses. More recently new opportunities to buy and sell pottery have been established via the internet with auction sites such as eBay. This book is for any collector interested in 20th century ceramics, whether a collector who concentrates on one factory, on a single designer, such as Clarice Cliff, or on a type of item, such as toast racks, egg cups or preserve pots. Written by the award-winning author Andrew Casey, an acknowledged expert on twentieth-century ceramics, this book covers the diverse range of pottery produced during the twentieth century, aiming to provide a starting point for all those collectors. |

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669) is amongst the greatest painters and engravers of all time. He was undoubtedly the major exponent of the Dutch Golden Age in art, and explored all genres of painting, from the group portrait — which he radically reinvented with The Night Watch — to biblical themes, to his constant engagement with self-portraiture, to landscape. Rembrandt's career is distinguished by his forceful personality, extraordinary technical ability, unceasing experimentation and vast visual knowledge, ranging from primitive Flemish painters to the Italian Renaissance. In a life marked by glory, misery, relationships contrary to bourgeois morality and numerous bereavements, Rembrandt always strove to represent reality and nature through isolating its innermost truth, in a search often opposed to artistic convention and the decorum of contemporary society. The book includes works from the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (4); Mauritshuis, The Hague; Staatliche Museen, Gemaeldegalerie, Berlin; Staedelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt; Alte Pinakothek, Munich; Musée Jacquemart-André, Paris; Musée du Louvre, Paris; Nationalmuseum, Stockholm; National Gallery, London (2); Kenwood House, London; Buckingham Palace, Royal Collections, London; National Gallery of Art, Washington; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Every book in the Timeline series offers a concise, striking visual chronology of its subject, whether this is the evolution of a single painter's style or the changing face of an entire movement in art, fashion or design. Despite first appearances, these are not like other books — each title pulls out to become an innovative two-sided guide. On the front, the Timeline shows you sixteen key images in chronological order — for example, excerpts from the crucial works of a particular artist, or details from evolving stages of an era in design. At a glance, you see a clear visual path through the development of the subject. On the back you will find all the detail — entire reproductions of the pieces discussed, succinct explorations of their context, meaning and history written by experts, biographies of the artists, and more. The Timeline series offers a fresh, simple visual reference that is ideal for art-lovers, casual visitors to museums and art galleries, and students — anyone who wants to see clearly how artistic styles evolve and change over time. |

Presents a selection of more than 100 furnishing textiles and designs that range from a spectacular printed hanging designed by the Wiener Werkstätte artist, Dagobert Peche, between 1911 and 1918, to a series of dramatic woven, silk and metal wall coverings Les Colombes designed by Henri Stephany for the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes. The Art Deco period is well represented by the works of Raoul Dufy, Alberto Lorenzi, Robert Bonfils, Alfred Latour, Emile Alain Seguy and Paul Dumas. Although the majority of pre-Second World War textiles are of French origin, the exhibition also includes some rare British furnishing fabrics from the 1930s, in particular the iconic and very elegant Magnolia Leaf by Marion Dorn, woven in off-white and silver viscut by Warner & Sons in 1936. During this period, Britain attracted talented European designers, such as Jacqueline Groag and Marian Mahler who had trained with Josef Hoffmann at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule. They became highly influential in creating a 'New Look' that took hold of Britain after the austerities of the Second World War. 'The Festival of Britain', held in 1951, was epitomised by Calyx which launched the career of its designer, Lucienne Day and is now considered to be a landmark of post-War design. So great was its success that several versions were produced as well as contemporary copies, all of which are reproduced here, in spectacular colour. Two great textiles from the 1950s — Seaweed designed by Ashley Havinden in 1954 for Arthur Sanderson and Grecian by Alec Hunter in 1956 for Warner & Sons — bridge the gap between the spirit and elegance of the inter-War period and the new 'contemporary' look of the 1950s. Britain maintained its pre-eminent position in textile design throughout the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s. This was because firms like Edinburgh Weavers, Heal & Sons and Hull Traders and museums such as the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester (the centre of the British textile industry) worked hard at integrating and promoting great design, often by well-known artists, with industry. Among the artists who worked with Edinburgh Weavers were Marino Marini, Victor Vasarely and Alan Reynolds. Britain was not alone in applying art to industry. An elegant example of Op Art is the work of the German artist, Wolf Bauer, whose 1969/70 designs for one of the leading American manufacturers, Knoll Textiles, is a highlight of this book. |

- Outstanding new book in the strong-selling New Classicists series — Premier classicists on the West Coast of America — A peek at the beautiful houses that Appleton has designed for the rich and famous, including many stars of the silver screen — Offers readers not only inspiration, but also a chance to dream — Features many exceptional colour photographs, clear drawings and plans, many depicting Appleton's famous classical detailing The design work of Marc Appleton's practice is a collaborative process with its clients, inspired by and responsive to their specific desires and needs. Frequently, it draws upon the time-honoured traditions of vernacular architecture, subtly reinterpreting them to evoke a presence of the past. The firm strives to avoid a repetitiously personalised style and is committed to the idea that architecture is a craft rather than an art, a process rather than an object. Appleton agrees with fellow Californian architect William Wurste's view that architecture is for people 'the picture frame, and not the picture'. |

«Floral prints, motifs and designs are always in fashion, and never more so than when used as the fabric for an English summer dress. From the naturalistic to the painterly, from the graphic to the abstract, every summer almost every woman in Britain in the last 100 years has worn or wanted to wear a floral frock. «Floral Frocks» explores this unassuming cultural phenomenon from the beginning of the 20th century to the present in a series of broadly themed chronological chapters, each setting floral printed dresses as part of a wider socio-cultural context. Taken together the book will give a general design history, but also raises issues surrounding the zeitgeist of each era through the medium of looking at one specific garment (the dress) rendered in one specific way (floral print). The book discusses in detail over fifty floral printed dresses with over 140 illustrations which will show sumptuous details and full-length shots of the floral frocks with examples of historic and contemporary floral printed dresses from both museum and private collections. The majority of the dresses featured will be from the 1930s to the 1970s with names such as Horrockses Fashions, Tootal, California Cottons and Laura Ashley as well as designers including Christian Dior, Janice Wainwright and John Bates. The design and making skills of the countless home dressmakers and fashion firms whose names are now not remembered in history are also recognised in the selection of dresses featured in the book.Archive photographs of girls and women over the last 100 years, drawn from a variety of sources, have been reproduced. In this way, readers are not only able to set the exhibits and surviving examples of material culture in context, but are also able to discover the extraordinary within the ordinary and to experience and remember their own recollections of wearing, owning or seeing floral printed dresses.» |

Remote Luxury: Top Resorts Down Under is the ultimate guide to getting away from it all in both Australia and New Zealand. Over the past decade or so, Australia and its just as spectacular neighbour across the Tasman have established a reputation for being two of the most sought-after destinations in the world. This reputation has come about from not only the extraordinary landscapes both countries boast but also the inspirational way Australasian architects and designers have used these landscapes to fashion innovative and memorable places to escape to. This beautifully photographed publication takes you on a visual journey through the most remote of these idyllic getaways, from luxurious but laidback lodges in the Outback to sophisticated eco resorts in the rainforest and sleek retreats by the sea. Some of the destinations are easily recognisable, such as the far-flung but first-class Burrawang West Station and the celebrities' favourite, Huka Lodge in New Zealand; but others are refreshingly lesser known, such as Capella Lodge on Lord Howe Island, the culinary hideaway known as the Lake House in country Victoria, and Awaroa Lodge in Awaroa Bay, New Zealand, a luxury lodge that's only accessible by water, air or an invigorating three-day hike. Whether your taste veers toward the Champagne lifestyle and designs that seduce with their total luxury or the quieter, more tucked away hideaways that offer style, service and solitude in equal measure, Remote Luxury — Top Resorts Down Under will enthrall and delight. |

Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851), 'the painter of light', was the most important English painter of the age of Romanticism. He merged his observation of natural phenomena with a particular attention to the atmospheric and an extraordinary, transformative visionary talent. After portrayals of the English countryside in the topographical tradition, such as Frosty Morning, (1813, London, Tate Britain), experiences such as his Grand Tour of Italy, where he much admired the light and scenery of the landscape, led Turner to paint canvasses in which light is rendered with dense impastos, as in Snow Storm — Steam-Boat off a Harbour's Mouth (1842, London, Tate Britain), and the celebrated Rain, Steam, and Speed — The Great Western Railway (1844, London, National Gallery) — an expressive treatment of a strongly contemporary theme. The book includes works from National Gallery, London (2); National Maritime Museum (Greenwich), London; Tate Britain, London (8); University Museum, Liverpool; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland; Museum of Arts, Dallas; National Gallery of Arts, Washington. |

«Cities like Hong Kong do not appear out of nowhere. Behind and beyond the skyline and the tourist attractions, people from all parts of China and the world have worked together to overcome daunting internal obstacles and external forces. In architecture, Wong & Ouyang has been an important contributor to that immense effort. The publication of this book, «Wong & Ouyang: Blueprints for Hong Kong» on the occasion of the company's 50th anniversary, is a fitting tribute to the accomplishments of the firm. In the last half century, buildings have become increasingly complex. The range of projects illustrated in this book — from master plans to building complexes and individual buildings — shows the scope of Wong & Ouyang's capabilities. Looking at the procession of projects and how they have changed over the years, it becomes apparent that the long-term stability and continuity of the firm and its ability to draw on expertise from around the world has created a strong core competence and 'institutional memory'. That has been a key factor in its ability to learn and improve with each succeeding task. The variety and size of the projects parallel the change and growth of Hong Kong to its present status as one of the most advanced cities in the world.» |

«The firm of Tiffany & Co. has long been regarded as America's premier maker and retailer of fine luxury goods. This is especially true in the case of jewellery, an area in which the company emerged as an arbiter of taste and style by the mid-19th century. Charles Lewis Tiffany, one of the founders of the firm, was astutely aware of the desire of newly emerged elites for high-style jewels that would rival those owned by European aristocrats. A savy entrepreneur, Tiffany would eventually purchase part of the French Crown jewels for his American clients, selling them along with outstanding diamonds, precious gem-set jewellery, and Swiss-made watches. All would bear the company's mark and by the end of the 19th century, the brand was firmly established. While Tiffany & Co. lavishly met the luxury needs of America's well-to-do, they also passionately developed an American style, promoting American materials and motifs. Their displays at the International Expositions met with great success, further increasing their reputation in the world-wide market. They were also quick to adapt technological advances, including the raised diamond mount («Tiffany setting»), new diamond-cutting techniques, and a system of hallmarking. Charles Lewis Tiffany's successors in the 20th century continued to create extraordinary adornments designed by outstanding artists such as Louis Comfort Tiffany, Jean Schlumberger, Angela Cummings, Elsa Peretti, and Paloma Picasso. This book, through a series of original essays, pays tribute to the firm's enduring ingenuity.» |

Architect Charles R. Stinson conceives each project as a balance of space and light, where horizontal and natural light bring the outside in. The result is a living space that is both transcendent and grounding; a place that lifts the spirit and connects those who live there. Whether he is envisioning a family home or creating an entire community, Stinson views the compositional process as the art of 'putting families and friendships' together. Architect and client collaborate to define an architectural vision that seamlessly joins beauty with function and interior with exterior. The book explores Charles Stinson's most significant work, offering readers an opportunity to see the spaces that live and breathe light in his homes, commercial projects and neighbourhoods. Renowned photographer Peter Bastianelli-Kerze captures these compositions in full colour and scope. Stinson's own sketches add an intimate layer to this stunning collection of works. |

Stuart Cohen and Julie Hacker are a multi-award-winning husband-and-wife architectural team whose vast complementary talents are presented in this first monograph of their residential work. Their elegant body of work is mostly concentrated in Chicago's leafy North Shore suburbs. Informed by both modern and classical principles, the traditionally styled homes inhabit these genteel neighbourhoods like fine pieces of furniture. The completed residences seem effortless but the designs behind them tend to be quite complex. Certain elements appear in each of their houses, including classical axial layouts, custom trim that organises spaces, views through glass cabinetry or French doors into other rooms. Cohen and Hacker work with their clients to understand the way they want to live, allowing them to combine the best traditional architectural elements with contemporary living spaces. Kitchens and bathrooms are a particular specialty of this talented duo. |

Symbol of prestige and venue of relaxation, the villa has always provided an exceptional opportunity for understanding architecture's relationship with the countryside. Purposely and solely comprised of new projects, this collection represents the contemporary interpretation of a theme, which, though it is firmly rooted in history, is also exposed to an endless amount of reinterpretations. The extraordinary pictures of the homes described in this volume reflect a variety of completely novel solutions. Text in English & Italian. |

Today surrealism may be firstly known as a school in literature and fine arts, but the influence of this 20th-century school on other domains cannot be underestimated. The world of contemporary design doesn't escape a healthy portion of surreal humour. Forms with a smile bundles designs and objects of modern surrealists and shows that nothing is what it seems to be. Hairy carpets, lamps in the shape of a milk bottle, USB sticks cut from wood branches or chairs made from plush toys. Is it just humour? Or is it a stimulating statement wrapped in a contagious smile? Just like surrealism, design sometimes tells more than we think. Armed with subtle irony these new surrealists wage war against a world reigned by a certain sérieux. Text in English and Dutch. |
