Draping is an art without rules as such, but to master it, you must understand the relationship of fabric to the body. It allows for freedom of garment design, and the opportunity to create customised clothing. Understanding grainlines and the effect they have, on not only the drape of the fabric and seams when being stitched, but also the stretch and therefore fit of a garment, is essential. Then you need to understand the complicated task of how to transfer your draping into pattern form. Once removed from the stand, you will need to know how to put the garment back together, and how to make adjustments to the pattern that won't alter your idea, but will work when you actually stitch it up. This book contains key chapters on understanding fabrics, grainlines and bias cutting, translating designs into patterns, making adjustments, constructing the lining, and finishing with zips, buttons, buttonholes etc. Draping is about problem solving and how to solve all of the problems is usually brings up! |

The Ambassador has been described as 'probably the most daring and enterprising trade magazine ever conceived'. With the motto 'Export or Die!', the magazine was renowned for its innovative design and adventurous editorial approach in promoting British manufacturing in the post-war period. This book takes a detailed look at the background and impact of The Ambassador. The magazine was driven by the vision of its founder Hans Juda and his wife, Elsbeth, who was responsible for much of the magazine's striking photography. Focusing on the perceived strengths of British industry, they set up ambitious photo shoots to showcase the latest couture fashions by the likes of Charles Creed and Victor Stiebel. One of Britain's most enigmatic and celebrated politicians, Winston Churchill was far more than a just successful wartime leader. International war correspondent, WWI soldier and Nobel Prize winning writer, Churchill always had an unshakable faith in his own abilities, despite his disastrous efforts at school. His faith was rewarded when he became Prime Minister of Britain at the height of WWII. Working tirelessly, his tremendous ability to inspire the nation during such times of horror has become legendary. Above all, he will always be remembered as the man who led the allied forces to victory, freeing Europe from the tyranny of Nazism. Lives in Action is a series of narrative biographies that recount the lives of some of the key figures in history. This book explores Cold War fashion in all its aspects, ranging from innovations in materials to the cybernetic visions of the 1960s, from the bikini to the spacesuit, vinyl radiation suits to high-tech jewellery, Paco Rabanne to Barbarella. Set in the context of art, film, science and design, Pavitt explores how the image of the body was shaped by Cold War concerns — atomic anxieties, the space race, technological developments and the first forays into 'hyper-reality.' With a stunning selection of images alongside military, political and scientific research, the book shows how counter-cultural theories and experiences in the later 1960s shaped an alternative view of the 'Cold War Body'. |

On the Engagement: «Don't allow awkward pauses to break the conversation because your thoughts and eyes are hungrily trying to follow your lover, who is manfully assisting the hostess». On Planning The Event: «Don't forget that elderly bridesmaids in youthful frocks and girlish hats are ridiculous to the unthinking, and pathetic to those who look below the surface».
